TECoSA has welcomed seven new postdoctoral researchers to the center. In this interview series, we will introduce the talented researchers joining our community and explore the innovative work they are pursuing. This interview features Mir Riyanul Islam.
Hi Riyanul, what were you doing before signing up as a post doc at TECoSA/KTH?
Before joining as a TECoSA postdoc at KTH, I completed my first postdoc tenure at Mälardalen University (MDU), Västerås, Sweden, where I also completed my PhD studies.
What is your research focusing on?
My research focuses on mostly Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). Currently, I am working on making Agentic AI trustworthy with XAI methods.
What challenges does your research address/what problem does it solve?
With the emergence of modern AI models, numerous tools and systems are developed for diverse tasks and domains. Moreover, regulatory commissions and authorities provide guidelines and requirements for these tools and systems to be trustworthy for human use. However, due to the diverse nature of the domains such as telecommunication, automobiles, etc., generalizing the trustworthiness requirements for these systems is one of the major challenges of my research.

I wish to produce effective methods for enhancing the trust of users on Agentic AI systems, says Riyanul Islam.
What makes this field particularly exciting to you?
There is a growing dependency on AI tools for mass people, and it is highly related to the trustworthiness of these tools or systems. This is also partly advised by several regulatory commissions, e.g., the European Union. The current demand on the trustworthiness of Agentic AI systems excites me most to work in this topic.
What do you look forward to the most during this period as a PhD?
I look forward to learning most from the veteran scholars among my colleagues at TECoSA/KTH to take my career further in academia. Also, I wish to produce effective methods for enhancing the trust of users on Agentic AI systems through my research.
What’s the most interesting or unusual talent you have that most people don’t know about?
I would say that the most unusual talent of mine might be that I can visualize everything I hear, read, or know.
