Invited talk on Safe & Reliable Automated Driving Decision Making

Abstract: Safety is a core concern for AD. We propose a framework to introduce safety constraints to decision making for AD. The formal STPA modeling is conducted on the operational scenarios of AD, namely, combining STPA models and ontology method to realize the structured formalized expression of the scenario, then based on that identifying the scenario hazards, and generating scenario safety constraints. The safety constraints obtained will be introduced to the perceptual neural network and quantifying the uncertainty of perceptual neural network output. Combining the safety perceptual output and human driving characteristic constraints (such as driving style and response time) to realize much safer decision making for AD.

Bio: Ci LIANG is currently the Associate Professor in tenure track and Ph.D. Supervisor with the School of Transportation Science and Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology. She worked as a Senior Engineer at the Swedish headquarters of Volvo Cars from 2018 to 2022, working on the project of system safety design for L4 Autonomous Driving System, and the project of functional safety design on Power & Energy control system of Electric Vehicles. Ci Liang was the nominee for the European ” Women in Rail Research and Innovation Award”, and the “8th Abertis Traffic Safety International Award” in France. She serves as the IFAC TC 7.4 “Transportation Systems” Technical Committee, the Chairman and IPC of the workshop SRToITS of international conference “SafeComp”, Guest Editor of SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles, reviewers of IEEE T-ITS, Reliability Engineering and System Safety, IEEE T-IV, etc., IEEE member and IEEE ITSS member.
