DESCRIPTION:23.04.11: This event is postponed  – new date to follow.\n****************************************************************************** \nInvited talk by Markus Kobelrausch\, TU Vienna\nWith a volume of less than 10 cm³ Milirobots are highly resource constrained agents. It is thus challenging to strike the right balance between efficiency of operation and flexibility to adapt to a new environment and tackle new tasks. \nTiny Developmental Skill Framework (TinyDSF) aims to provide a generic set of techniques for Milirobots\, that minimizes the set of hardwired\, innate skills and maximizes the space of environments and tasks that the Milirobot can eventually and autonomously adapt to. \nThis talk will present the bootstrapping of skills in TinyDSF. At the starting point\, the Milirobot comes with built-in knowledge of basic physical laws and geometric relations of the 3-D space. Also\, it can read signals from its sensors and write commands to its actuators. However\, it does not know the meaning of sensory information and actuator commands\, nor does it know the specifics of its own body or anything about the environment. The bootstrapping process follows three steps: (1) During Skill Search\, the Milirobot explores the effects of motor command on its sensory input and learns\, by exploration\, elementary operations like linear and elementary motion. (2) During Skill learning\, it explores and learns compound operations like moving along a rectangle or circle. (3) Higher Order Skills comprise operations like path following\, wall following\, swarm following\, etc. Higher order skills can be described in abstract notation and downloaded from a knowledge database. The Milirobot learns to execute and optimize higher order skills based on its previously acquired skills. \nMarkus D. Kobelrausch\, MSc received his Master’s degree in Embedded System Engineering from the University of Applied Science Technikum Vienna. He has an 8-year career in the automotive industry\, where he focused on safety-related real-time systems for autonomous driving. As part of his Ph.D. at the Vienna University of Technology (since 2019)\, he has been researching resource-constrained systems that exhibit cognitive properties and build knowledge and awareness over time using various resource-constrained learning methods. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur April seminar is with Prof Simon Burton\, Scientifc Director at Fraunhofer IKS.  This will be a Zoom-only event\, and is jointly organized by TECoSA and Digital Futures.  The Zoom link is https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267.\nABSTRACT:  There is increasing interest in the application of machine learning (ML) technologies to safety-critical cyber-physical systems\, with the promise of increased levels of autonomy due to their potential for solving complex perception and planning tasks. However\, demonstrating the safety of ML is seen as one of the most challenging hurdles to their widespread deployment for such applications. In this presentation I explore the factors which make the safety assurance of ML such a challenging task. In particular we address the impact of uncertainty on the confidence in ML safety assurance arguments. I show how this uncertainty is related to complexity in the ML models as well as the inherent complexity of the tasks that they are designed to implement. Based on definitions of categories and severity of uncertainty as well as an exemplary assurance argument structure\, we examine possible defeaters to the assurance claims and consequently how the assurance argument can be made more convincing. The analysis combines an understanding of insufficiencies in machine learning models\, their causes and mitigating measures with a systematic analysis of the types of asserted context\, asserted evidence and asserted inference within the assurance argument. \nThis leads to a systematic identification of requirements on the assurance argument structure as well as supporting evidence. A combination of qualitative arguments combined with quantitative evidence are required to build a robust argument for safety-related properties of ML functions that is continuously refined to reduce residual and emerging uncertainties in the arguments after the function has been deployed. \nThe presentation ends with an outlook on both developments in the standardisation of the safety of AI/ML\, in particular ISO PAS 8800 Road Vehicles – Safety and AI\,  as well as open research topics. \nBIO:  Prof. Dr. Simon Burton graduated in computer science at the University of York\, where he also achieved his Phd on the topic of the verification of safety-critical software in 2001. Simon has a background in a number of industries but has spent the last two decades mainly focusing on the automotive sector\, working in research and development projects as well as leading consulting\, engineering service and product organisations. Most recently\, he held the role of Director of Vehicle Systems Safety at Robert Bosch GmbH where\, amongst other things\, his efforts were focused on developing strategies for ensuring the safety of automated driving systems. \nIn September 2020\, he joined Fraunhofer IKS in the role of scientific director where he steers research strategy into “safe intelligence”. His own personal research interests include the safety assurance of complex\, autonomous systems\, and the safety of machine learning. In addition to his role within Fraunhofer IKS\, he has the role of honorary visiting professor at the University of York where he supports a number of research activities and interdisciplinary collaborations. He is also an active member in various standardization committees\, and is the convenor of the ISO working group ISO/TC 22/SC 32/WG14 with the responsibility for developing an international standard on Safety and AI for road vehicles.

Yet\, alongside this increased presence comes also more opportunities for failures to occur. Such failures can be physical\, technical\, or social and can lead to sometimes severe communication and task breakdowns. In this seminar\, I will cover the role of such failures in shaping (different kinds of) human-robot interactions. I will also discuss different psychological concepts that are especially relevant to assessing and understanding robot failures\, including trust\, robot agency\, and likeability. This research can also be considered in light of the replication crisis\, where different challenges might be encountered by researchers when designing and implementing user studies involving both humans and robots. Consequently\, the seminar will also consider the role of interdisciplinary robotics research in addressing such challenges. \nBIO: Rebecca Stower  is a postdoctoral researcher in the social robotics lab (SORO) at the Division of Robotics\, Perception and Learning at KTH Royal Institution of Technology in Stockholm\, Sweden. Previously\, she worked as a researcher at the Paris8 CHArt Laboratory in collaboration with the Laboratory of Intuitive and Natural Interactions with Teleoperated Robots (INIT) in Montreal. She graduated with her PhD in Psychology in 2021 as part of the ANIMATAS H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie European Training Network (2018-2022). She is interested in the role of failures during human robot interactions\, and how this affects people’s attitudes and behaviours towards robots. SUMMARY:Situation Awareness for Autonomous Agents Under Limited Sensing
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the half-time seminar for José Manuel Gaspar Sánchez!  \nAbstract:   Autonomous agents need to understand their environment and predict its future evolution based on the information collected by their sensors\, i.e. they  need situation awareness. This awareness is used to make predictions about the future and plan their own actions accordingly. \nLimited sensor range and occlusions constrain the portion of the environment that can be observed at once. They provide defenders a proactive and autonomous security mechanism by engaging the adversaries and influencing their moves to the defender’s advantage. Game theory captures the strategic and self-interested nature of attackers and defenders in cybersecurity. It provides an ideal set of quantitative tools to develop such a framework to analyze and design deception. In this talk\, we first present a taxonomy of deception and counter-deception and understand how they can be conceptualized\, quantified\, and designed or mitigated. Then\, we present a class of dynamic games of incomplete information to capture the fundamental characteristics of deception and demonstrate the applications of game theory and learning in problems such as attack engagement\, lateral movement\, and information manipulation. The talk will also discuss open problems and research challenges that the game theory community can address and contribute with an objective to build a multidisciplinary bridge between game theory and cybersecurity. \nBIO:  Quanyan Zhu received B. Eng. in Honors Electrical Engineering from McGill University in 2006\, M. A. Sc. from the University of Toronto in 2008\, and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2013. After stints at Princeton University\, he is currently an associate professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, New York University (NYU). He is an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) and Center for Cyber Security (CCS) at NYU. He is a recipient of many awards\, including NSF CAREER Award\, NYU Goddard Junior Faculty Fellowship\, NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF)\, NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS)\, and Mavis Future Faculty Fellowships. He spearheaded and chaired INFOCOM Workshop on Communications and Control on Smart Energy Systems (CCSES)\, Midwest Workshop on Control and Game Theory (WCGT)\, and ICRA workshop on Security and Privacy of Robotics. His current research interests include game theory\, machine learning\, cyber deception\, network optimization and control\, smart cities\, Internet of Things\, and cyber-physical systems. He has served as the general chair or the TPC chair of the 7th and the 11th Conference on Decision and Game Theory for Security (GameSec) in 2016 and 2020\, the 9th International Conference on NETwork Games\, COntrol and OPtimisation (NETGCOOP) in 2018\, the 5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Security (ICAIS 2019) in 2019\, and 2020 IEEE Workshop on Information Forensics and Security (WIFS). He is a co-author of three recent books published by Springer: Cyber-Security in Critical Infrastructures: A Game-Theoretic Approach (with S. Rass\, S. Schauer\, and S. König)\, A Game- and Decision-Theoretic Approach to Resilient Interdependent Network Analysis and Design (with J. SUMMARY:How does edge AI change the principles of communications and computing?
DESCRIPTION:A Digital Futures Distinguished lecture with Kaibin Huang from The University of Hong Kong\nAbstract: Data has replaced oil as the world’s most valuable resource. An enormous amount of data is being generated 24/7 by tens of billions of edge devices at the network edge. Their distillation into AI using machine learning algorithms promises to automate practically unlimited IoT applications ranging from autonomous driving to virtual reality. This gives rise to a hot area known as edge intelligence\, a distinctive feature of 6G mobile networks. \nThree questions will be asked to understand the induced paradigm shift in communications:\n1) Is reliable communication always needed?\n2) Is interference always a foe?\n3) Is analogue computing outdated? \nProf Huang will introduce some 6G edge-intelligence technologies that feature communication-computing fusion to find negative answers to these questions. SUMMARY:(online) Consultation Workshop on Edge AI  - KDT JU’s Focus Topic Call 2023
DESCRIPTION:As part of the preparation of KDT JU Work Programme and Call 2023\, a focus topic on Edge AI is under discussion. The work programme promotes focus topics notably in the context of delivering on national and European policy priorities such as digital leadership. \nThere will be a virtual open workshop on Monday 24th October 2022 (16:00 – 18:00) to get feedback from the ECS (electronic components and systems) community on our vision for this focus topic. The baseline of the workshop is a long-term strategy for a series of focus topics in this area\, as well as a specific draft text for Call 2023\, as it was prepared by a core team of experts gathered by the three industry associations that are partnering in the KDT JU. \nThe workshop is organized in two parts. The first part will include a general presentation of the workshop baseline and brief pitches by selected experts. SUMMARY:2nd RL-CONFORM Workshop\, co-located with IROS'22
DESCRIPTION:Reinforcement Learning meets HRI\, Control\, and Formal Methods!\nTECoSA researchers Iolanda Leite. Jana Tumova. Sanne van Waveren and Alexis Linard are co-organising a 1-day workshop at IROS’22\, taking place in Kyoto\, Japan. \nReinforcement learning (RL) has shown remarkable achievements in applications ranging from autonomous driving\, object manipulation\, or beating best players in complex board-games. Different communities\, including RL\, human-robot interaction (HRI)\, control\, and formal methods (FM)\, have proposed multiple techniques to increase safety\, transparency\, and robustness of RL. However\, elementary problems of RL remain open: exploratory and learned policies may cause unsafe situations\, lack task-robustness\, or be unstable. By satisfactorily addressing these problems\, RL research will have long-lasting impact and see breakthroughs on real physical systems and in human-centered environments. As an example\, a collaborative mobile manipulator needs to be robust and verifiably safe around humans. This requires an integrated approach with RL to learn optimal policies for complex manipulation tasks\, control techniques to ensure stability of the system\, FM techniques to provide formal guarantees to ensure safety\, and techniques from human-robot interaction to learn from and interact with humans. \nThe aim of this multidisciplinary workshop is to bring these communities together to: \n\nIdentify key challenges and opportunities related to safe and robust exploration\, formal safety and stability guarantees of control systems\, safety in physical human-robot collaborative systems;\nProvide unique insights into how these challenges depend on the application\, desired system properties\, and complexity of the environment;\nPropose new and debate existing approaches to ensure desired properties of learned policies in a wide range of domains;\nDiscuss existing and new benchmarks to accelerate safe and robust RL research;\nDisseminate the outcomes of the workshop and publish the results as a perspectives article in one of the major robotics journals.\n\n \n  \nThere will be two interactive panel sessions\, one on Principles and understanding of RL algorithms and models and one on Benchmarks\, implementation\, and accelerating RL research. \nFor the full program\, please see\nhttps://rlconform-workshop.github.io/\n  \n

All are welcome to attend and we look forward to some lively discussions.  Members can register via the invitations; non-members can register via email to tecosa-admin @kth . se\nOur October seminar is with Professor Martina Maggio from the Computer Science Department at Saarland University and also the Department of Automatic Control at Lund University. \nThe session will be given in via Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267). \nABSTRACT:  Feedback control is pervasive in our lives\, as it often lays the foundation of technology we daily interface with. Control systems are at the core of the energy distribution infrastructure\, govern the behavior of vehicles\, and are embedded into household appliances like washing machines. Controllers usually use sensors\, that provide information about the physical environment\, to calculate the values that actuators should assume to fulfill specific requirements. For example\, adaptive cruise control systems use the throttle to automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed\, while maintaining a safe distance from vehicles ahead. \nThe actuator values are calculated using hardware and software. Hence\, the computation of the new control signals is subject to accidental faults\, systematic issues\, and software bugs. However\, in many cases\, these computational problems can safely be ignored. This talk will introduce the problem of analyzing the behavior of control software subject to computational problems\, and verifying when no corrective action is needed\, i.e.\, when the control software is able to fulfill the system requirements despite the presence of computational problems. \nBIO:  Martina Maggio is a Professor at the Computer Science Department\, Saarland University since March 2020 and also an Associate Professor at the Department of Automatic Control\, Lund University since 2017.  She completed her Ph.D. at Politecnico di Milano\, working with Alberto Leva on the applications of control-theoretical tools for the design of computing systems. During her Ph.D. she spent one year as a visiting graduate student at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT\, working with Anant Agarwal and Hank Hoffmann on the Self-Aware Computing project.  In 2019\, she spent a sabbatical year at Bosch Corporate Research in Renningen\, Germany\, working with Dirk Ziegenbein and Arne Hamann on the verification and validation of control systems in presence of deadline misses and computational faults.

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Security and Privacy  in Machine Learning: Threat Models and Mitigation Measures

Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur September seminar is with Dr Raksha Ramakrishna\, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Division of Network and System Technology at KTH .  The session will be given in via Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267). \nABSTRACT: Machine Learning (ML) is becoming ubiquitous by the day\, leading to an increase in the privacy attacks that are possible thereby risking the security of both the data used for training the ML models and the learned models themselves which could be considered intellectual property.  In this seminar\, we will discuss the taxonomy of threat models for ML models and highlight examples of privacy attacks and possible mitigation measures for them. In particular\, property inference attacks in the context of centralized and federated ML models will also be discussed based on our recent work.  \nBIO: I received my Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University (ASU) in 2020 where I worked in the SINE lab directed byProf. Anna Scaglione . I obtained an MS degree from ASU in 2017 and BE degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering\, Bangalore\, India in 2014.   I am currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Division of Network and System Technology with Prof. György Dán’s group\, and also affiliated to the Center for Trustworthy Edge Computing Systems and Applications (TECoSA) . \nMy research interests are in the domains of statistical signal processing\, smart grids and more recently in security and privacy in federated machine learning systems.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the RAINBOW project\, an EU research project to design and develop an open and trusted Fog computing platform that facilitates the deployment and management of scalable\, heterogeneous and secure IoT services and cross-cloud applications. \nThis workshop presents platforms for managing Cloud-Edge infrastructures and applications deployed on them. An overview of the RAINBOW Platform will be presented\, to give the audience a taste of its innovations.  Futurewei Technologies\, USA will present the open-source Centaurus platform for building unified and highly scalable distributed cloud-edge systems. Additionally\, the Polaris Framework designed for handling high-level SLOs and elasticity in both platforms will be showcased. DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop takes place in conjunction with a Guest Seminar (10-11 Engineering Resilience for Cognitive Systems) and a half-time PhD seminar and discussion (13-15 Efficient Strategies for Safety Assurance of Automated Driving). ABSTRACT:  In recent years\, the lack of sufficient evidence to support the safety claims of Automated Driving Systems (ADSs) has become evident\, and we have yet to see large scale deployment on public roads\, despite the promises made by several high profile auto-makers. Contrary to previous generations of automotive systems\, common design\, development\, verification and validation methods for safety critical systems no longer suffice to cope with the increased complexity and uncertainty of an ADS. Further\, there is a lack of understanding of how these common methods\, individually or in combination\, contribute\, or fail to contribute\, to provide evidence for the safety claims of the ADS. The workshop will summarise findings from a state-of-the-art survey and accompanied identified research gaps. Workshop participants will\, in an interactive format\, be engaged in discussions to validate these findings as well as discuss promising directions forward. Contrary to previous generations of automotive systems\, common development and safety assurance practises no longer suffice to accommodate the increased system complexity and operational uncertainty inherent to an ADS. This is why we have yet to see a large scale deployment of ADSs on public roads\, despite recent technological progress and the promises made by several high-profile auto-makers. For that purpose\, I have in my research explored the research question: What are efficient strategies for safety assurance of ADSs? In this seminar\, I present my contributions to-date\, wherein some insights I have gained when tackling this research question are collected. In particular\, I divide my contributions into three themes: understanding the completeness of the development and verification task of the ADS; deriving a driving policy for the ADS with respect to quantitative safety requirements while incorporating knowledge from operational data\, and surveying the state-of-the art\, both general methods providing evidence for safety of the ADS as well as assurance methods. Leaning on these insights\, I present my intended next steps of my thesis: my intended research direction and the proposed research questions to guide me through to the dissertation. More specifically\, I intend to merge the existing approach of dynamic risk assessment\, wherein the decisions of the ADS are conditioned on the current operating conditions; and the precautionary safety approach\, where quantitative safety requirements are fulfilled through a probabilistic view of risk. Thereby\, I hope to provide an assurance approach that is both effective and efficient by considering risk\, from a statistical standpoint\, while\, in run-time\, conditionally deriving appropriate actions based on the experienced operating conditions of the ADS. \nThe presentation will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Mario Trapp\, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems at IKS (Munich\, Germany).    \nBIO:  Magnus Gyllenhammar pursues a PhD at KTH Royal Institute of Technology as part of his employment at Zenseact in Gothenburg. His research focuses on finding efficient strategies for safety argumentation of ADSs\, especially focusing on dynamic risk assessment in relation to the fulfilment of a quantitative risk norm. He received a MSc. in Engineering Physics\, major in Complex Adaptive System\, from Chalmers University of Technology\, in 2016. In 2018 he joined Zenseact (then Zenuity) and has since worked on creating and realising data-driven strategies for verification and safety argumentation of ADSs.

Mostly\, however\, it is just used as a modern label for existing dependability concepts. But resilience is much more than that. It stands for the property of a system to optimize utility whilst preserving safety in uncertain contexts. This means  a tremendous change of principles. Resilience is about building flexible structures that are capable to adapt to even unforeseen contexts by changing their structure and their behavior – it is the goal to optimize utility whilst preserving safety\, it is not the goal to preserve a fixed structure and behavior that were specified a-priori without knowing the contexts the system would have to face. To this end\, systems must become aware of their own state and context and adapt themselves\, i.e. yielding real resilience requires self-adaptivity\, which comes along with a long list of challenges if it comes to safety-critical systems. \nThis talk will therefore provide a deeper insight into the concept of resilience\, how it differs from classical dependability\, and how to engineer resilient systems in safety-critical applications. To this end\, it will approach a definition of resilience based on existing work in the dependability field but also by revisiting the history of resilience in other disciplines. It will elaborate what we can learn from the physical\, psychological\, and ecological mechanisms of resilience and it will derive a conceptual framework for Cognitive Resilience that helps us to engineer resilient cognitive systems. \nBIO:  apl. Prof. Dr. habil. Mario Trapp is Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS.  In 2005\, he obtained his PhD with distinction from the University of Kaiserslautern\, where he also did his habilitation in 2016. In 2005\, he joined Fraunhofer IESE\, where he was initially responsible as a department head for the topic area of safety-critical software before being head of the “Embedded Systems” division from 2009 to 2017. After being appointed Acting Director of Fraunhofer ESK (today Fraunhofer IKS) effective January 1\, 2018\, he assumed this role on a permanent basis on May 1\, 2019. \nFor many years\, Prof Trapp has been contributing his expertise in the development of innovative embedded systems in the context of successful partner projects\, in cooperation with both leading international corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises. His current personal research focus is on safety assurance for autonomous and distributed systems\, which form the technological basis of many future scenarios such as Industrie 4.0 or automated driving. \nHe is the author of numerous international scientific publications and teaches as an apl. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nThe final seminar this Spring is given in conjunction with the 8th Quarterly Meeting for members\, held in real life here in Stockholm.  However\, if you wish to join the seminar on-line\, you can do so via: https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267. \nOur guest speaker is Mahadev Satyanarayanan\, Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (also a member of TECoSA’s International Scientific Advisory Board)\, who will be addressing\nWearable Cognitive Assistance:  Vision\, Reality and Challenges \n \nABSTRACT:  Viewed as mobile computing systems with built-in sensing\, processing\, and persistent storage\, humans are the result of more than 1 billion years of evolution. Our chances of improving upon nature in a short time (say\, 10 years) are negligible if we are bound by the same rules as biological evolution. However\, we have a unique opportunity that is not available to nature\, namely\, to amplify human cognition in real time through low-latency\, wireless access to infrastructure resources. These resources can be larger\, heavier\, more energy hungry\, and more heat dissipative than could ever be carried or worn by a human user.   Edge Computing and 5G are key enablers of this vision.  We have been exploring wearable cognitive assistance since 2014\, and built close to 20 applications of this genre.   In this talk\, I will share what we have learned through this experience.   The potential for this emerging technology to improve human productivity in many domains is indisputable.  At the same time\, important challenges must be overcome to realize this potential. \nBIO:  Satya’s multi-decade research career has focused on the challenges of performance\, scalability\, availability and trust in information systems that reach from the cloud to the mobile edge of the Internet.  In the course of this work\, he has pioneered many advances in distributed systems\, mobile computing\, pervasive computing\, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Most recently\, his seminal 2009 publication “The Case for VM-based Cloudlets in Mobile Computing” and the ensuing research has  led to the emergence of Edge Computing.  Satya is the Carnegie Group University Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.  He received the PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon\, after Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Madras.
