SUMMARY:Summer School on Systems Architecting (Utö)
DESCRIPTION:TECoSA partner Syntell has organized a one-week Summer School during the third week of August since 1999!  This takes place on on the island of Utö from 15-20 August\, and includes three parallel courses related to lifecycle management of complex systems.  Aimed at practitioners and PhD students\,  participants come mainly from major Scandinavian industries and public authorities\, see https://www.syntell.se/en/summerschool2021/ \nIt is an intense week packed with learning as well social activities in a inspiring environment. As one former participant said: “Long hours\, no time to get bored”.  This year we have taken a number of measures in response to the pandemic. We have reduced the numbers of participants per course\, so 2021 is somewhat an “executive version”. \nAs of 9 August\, we have a last-minute opening on the Systems Architecting Fundamentals course.   Given the short notice\, TECOSA colleagues wishing to join are offered a special 50% discount  (22 375kr instead of 44 750kr all inclusive). \nIf you are interested\, please contact Tom Strandberg ASAP!   If you want more information or references from previous participants (now more than 1100) you can also contact Tom.

SUMMARY:Innovation Eco systems for Systems of Systems (SoS) at the IEEE SoSE conference 2021
DESCRIPTION:Format: Interactive session\, on-line [2021.06.22: See slides here! SoSE InnovEco for CPSoS] \nContext: IEEE Systems of Systems Engineering Conference: http://sosengineering.org/2021/\nAll interactive sessions: http://sosengineering.org/2021/panels-and-interactive-sessions/\nAdditional relevant information: http://sosengineering.org/2021/keynotes/ \nSession short abstract: Digitalization\, and more generally cyber-physical systems\, pave the way for new services and capabilities that provide potential for developing entirely new SoS\, within and across existing domains\, giving rise to new eco-systems. Forming such eco-systems will often face significant hurdles in terms of organizational\, legislative and business model concerns\, in addition to technical issues. This interactive session brings together a number of perspectives and experts to discuss the corresponding challenges\, experiences and avenues ahead for overcoming such hurdles\, including (but not limited to)\, data sharing\, best practices for accelerating innovation across (previously) separated domains\, and experiences in multi-domain collaborations and open test arenas. \nExtended session description: Digitalization\, and more generally cyber-physical systems\, pave the way for new services and collaborations through new cost-efficient sensors\, connectivity\, data sharing\, (decentralized/ centralized) computation\, and sometimes also decentralized manufacturing/maintenance enabled by 3d printing. The resulting new capabilities provide the potential for developing entirely new applications and business offerings\, within and across existing domains\, giving rise to new eco-systems. \nAs an example\, consider the case of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). An ITS can be developed to provide proactive behaviors including the avoidance of cracks and pot-holes in roads (through data collection\, analysis\, digital twins and proactive maintenance and/or influenced vehicle behaviors)\, thereby optimizing and reducing efforts\, emissions and energy for road repairs\, and moreover improving traffic safety. Of course\, the potential does not stop here\, and extends to energy optimization and traffic efficiency. The example highlights the opportunity to share data between two separate domains\, in this case road infrastructure and road traffic. Combining the data (for example that gathered during road construction\, by automated vehicles and infrastructure) with vehicle/ infrastructure computational capabilities for learning\, prediction\, planning and coordination\, enables new functionalities and services in the ITS. However\, this requires that multiple stakeholder can form constructive collaborations. \nForming such systems of systems will often face significant hurdles in terms of organizational\, legislative and business model concerns\, in addition to technical interoperability and trustworthiness issues. This interactive session will bring together a number of perspectives and experts to discuss the corresponding challenges\, experiences and avenues ahead for overcoming such hurdles. \nWe are not limited to specific domains\, and prefer discussions and contributions that emphasize take-aways of relevance for multiple domains. \nPreliminary list of topics of interest: \n\nOpen innovation by sharing data\, but what are successful models for sharing data while meeting legal requirements and mitigating risks?\nHow can innovation be accelerated or at least supported (not prevented) when referring to new cyber-enables opportunities across traditional domains?\nExperiences\, pitfalls and best practices in multi-domain collaborations and open test arenas\n\nKeynote speaker: Professor Ron Adner  (http://faculty.tuck.dartmouth.edu/ron-adner/) \nPanelists: \nPanel Chair: Prof Martin Törngren (KTH\, TECoSA Director\, ICES Director)\nProf Ron Adner (Tuck School)\nProf Monica Bellgran (KTH)\nDr Martin Karlsson (Atlas Copco\, TECoSA Board\, ICES Board Chair)\nProf Nicolette Lakemond (LiU)\nProf Tobias Larsson (BTH)\nProf Kim Wikström (Åbo Akademi)

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Deterministic Reactive Software for Embedded\, Edge\, and Cloud Systems
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Spring they will be on-line\, and all are welcome to join. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members.\nMarten Lohstroh\nThe eighth speaker in our series is Dr Martin Lohstroh of UC Berkeley\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.  Marten is a postdoctoral researcher advised by Professor Edward A. Lee\, who was also his doctoral adviser. Since obtaining his PhD from Berkeley\, he has remained focused on disproving the dogma that determinism is fundamentally at odds with high performance\, and making the case that time is a valuable and under leveraged abstraction in computing. In 2018\, he was a recipient of the Systems and Software Modeling (SoSyM) Best Paper Award.  Marten also holds a BSc in Computer Science and MSc in Grid Computing\, both from the University of Amsterdam. (https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~marten/) \nPanel: György Dan (Chair)\, Ingemar Söderquist (SAAB)\, Martin Törngren (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nDeterministic Reactive Software for Embedded\, Edge\, and Cloud Systems \nABSTRACT:  Determinism is notoriously hard to achieve in concurrent systems\, and this poses serious challenges to our ability to build confidence in the correctness of their implementation. The growing pervasiveness of networked computing and a trend towards integrating computationally demanding artificial intelligence components into real-time cyber-physical systems (think of robotics\, autonomous vehicles\, etc.) add urgency to this problem. This talk is about a solution in the form of a concurrent programming model called reactors (actors\, revisited)\, that delivers determinism by default. The execution of reactors is underpinned by a temporal model that incorporates a multiplicity of timelines—some logical\, relating to discrete synchronous-reactive ticks\, and some physical\, relating to the passage of wall-clock time. The relationship that reactors establish between events across timelines allows for the construction of programs that react predictably to unpredictable external events. Moreover\, determinism in reactor systems can be maintained in a distributed setting under quantifiable assumptions. We discuss this work through the lens of Lingua Franca (LF)\, a polyglot reactor-oriented coordination language developed in a collaboration between UC Berkeley\, UT Dallas\, TU Dresden\, and Kiel University. Distributed LF programs may span deeply embedded\, edge\, and cloud systems. \nDates in the Seminar Series for this academic year have included: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June. Dates for Autumn’21 and Spring’22 will be announced after the summer.

SUMMARY:Research Forum (Workshop 3): Micro-trends
DESCRIPTION:All trends starts with a micro-trend. During this interactive workshop\, we will explore a method to analyze micro-trends in general and more specifically what influence they can have on the TECoSA ecosystem. The result will be used for new research questions\, master thesis proposal and ideation for research project proposals. \nPreparation: Document micro-trends in your personal and professional life (this will be used as the input data) \nBefore our research forum in May\, I would like that you to do a short reflection on micro-trends. This will give additional value to our discussions and explorations. Prepare 2 micro-trends that you have observed during the Spring. \nA micro-trend is something that that might be the beginning of a change\, but we are not yet sure. \nPlease note\, it doesn’t have to be related to your business. \nExamples: \n\nDuring the last month\, 4 customers/colleagues/partners asked me [….]. Previously\, I seldom get that question.\nDuring the spring\, 4 of our suppliers/customers/colleagues has [….].\nBefore the pandemic […] was one important part of our customer/employer offer. Now\, the interest seems to be very low.\nWhen I am walking thru the city/attending digital events or customer meetings\, I have observed that […]. Previously this was not common.\n\nFrom Spring  2021\, the Research Forum will be open to all TECoSA members\, from academia and industry alike\, by invitation to tecos-all.  Facilitator: Martin Karlsson (martink9@kth.se)

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Anomaly Detection and Causal Reasoning about Attacks in SCADA Systems
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Spring they will be on-line\, and all are welcome to join. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members.\nKlara Nahrstedt\nThe seventh speaker in our series is Prof Klara Nahrstedt\, Director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prof Nahrstedt is also a member of TECoSA’s International Scientific Advisory Board. You can read more about Prof Nahrstedt here: https://cs.illinois.edu/about/people/faculty/klara \nPanel: Lei Feng (Chair)\, Magnus Isaksson (RTE)\, Fredrik Asplund (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nAnomaly Detection and Causal Reasoning about Attacks in SCADA Systems \nABSTRACT: Abstract: The SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are widely used in critical cyber-physical systems (CPS) such as Smart Grid\, Manufacturing and other mission-critical CPS systems. SCADA devices and networks are often subject to a wide range of attacks coming from external attackers and/or internal misconfigurations.  Traditional intrusion detection systems are deployed to ensure the security of SCADA systems\, but they often focus on monitoring only one or two levels of network data\, such as traffic or source data\, and continuously generate a large number of alerts without further analyzing them for causal reasoning. \nIn this talk\, we present anomaly detection systems\, such as ED4GAP and EDMOND\, and a causal reasoning framework\, such as CAPTAR. ED4GAP is an efficient edge-based detector for GOOSE-based source data attacks. EDMOND is an edge-based anomaly detector for MODBUS traffic\, which analyzes SCADA network anomalies at all three levels of network traffic data (transport\, protocol\, source data)\, aggregates alerts to decrease the volume of alerts\, and sends aggregated alerts to control center for causal analysis. CAPTAR is a cloud-based causal reasoning framework which correlates and matches aggregated alerts to causal polytrees. Bayesian inference is performed on the causal polytrees to produce a high-level view of the security state of the protected SCADA network. We will discuss the anomaly detection and causal reasoning analyses on attack examples\, and show experimentally that\, using GOOSE\, MODBUS and DNP3 network traffic\, we can do anomaly detection and attack reasoning in real-time. \nJoint work with Dr. Wenyu Ren\, Dr. Tuo Yu\, Dr. Atul Bohara\, Dr. Jordi Ros-Giralt\, Ghada Elbez\, Tim Yardley\, Al Valdes\, Prof. Bill Sanders in the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. \nBIO: Klara Nahrstedt is the Grainger Distinguished Chair of Engineering Professor in the Computer Science Department\, and Director of Coordinated Science Laboratory in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests are directed toward end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and resource management in large scale multimedia distributed systems and networks\, and real-time security and privacy in cyber-physical systems. SUMMARY:Resilient Resource Allocation for Service Placement in Mobile Edge Clouds
DESCRIPTION:TECoSA PhD student Peiyue Zhao will defend his thesis – abstract below.  All are welcome to join. Please contact peiyue @ kth.se for the link. \nAbstract \nMobile edge computing makes available distributed computation and storage resources in close proximity to end users and allows to provide low-latency and high-capacity services within mobile networks. Therefore\, mobile edge computing is emerging as a promising architecture for hosting critical services with stringent latency and performance requirements\, which otherwise are challenging to be addressed in conventional cloud computing architectures. Notable use cases of mobile edge computing include real-time data analytic services\, industrial process control\, and computation offloading for massive Internet of things devices. However\, those services rely on efficient resource management\, including resource dimensioning and service placement\, and require to be resilient to cyber-attacks\, to faulty components and to operation mistakes. The work in this thesis proposes models of resilient resource management that support rapid response to incidents in mobile edge computing and develops efficient algorithms for the resulting resource management problems. \nIn the first part of the thesis\, we consider resilient resource management for edge computing systems in which failover is realized by restoring additional service instances in different mobile edge computing nodes in case of failures. We first develop a placement algorithm based on Benders decomposition and linear relaxation to determine the mobile edge computing nodes to be opened and to compute the placement of the service instances with respect to a set of considered failure scenarios\, with the objective of minimizing operation costs. Upon the occurrence of a failure scenario\, service migration is to be triggered to migrate the service instances from one placement to another placement\, for which we further develop service migration algorithms to schedule migration under time constraints\, so as to minimize service interruptions. \nIn the second part of the thesis\, we consider resilient resource management in mobile edge computing for services with different levels of resilience requirements. Resilience is achieved by synchronizing states of the services to two types of standby instances that maintain the trade-off between energy consumption and activation time such that the standby instances can take over the service seamlessly as an instantaneous failure response. We formulate the joint problem of resource dimensioning and service placement for minimizing energy consumption and prove that it is NP-hard. We propose an efficient approximation algorithm based on Lagrangian relaxation to decide the type\, amount\, and locations of the computation resources and to compute the placement of service instances and their associated standby instances. We then consider the same resilience model but for hosting periodic services in mobile edge computing systems with resources portioned into availability zones\, under schedulability constraints. We formulate the corresponding resilient resource management problem as a non-linear programming problem and prove that it is NP-hard. We propose efficient solutions based on approximation programming and primal-dual approaches for resilient service placement. \nBy considering different models of resilient service placement in mobile edge computing\, the results in this thesis provide effective\, efficient\, and scalable resource management algorithms for emerging mobile edge computing systems.

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Edge Intelligence: The Surprises\, Risks and Lessons
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Spring they will be on-line\, and all are welcome to join. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members.\nAaron Ding\nThe sixth speaker in our series is Asst Prof Aaron Ding\, Assistant Professor in Engineering Systems & Services at TU Delft and Adjunct Professor in Computer Science at University of Helsinki .You can read more at: http://homepage.tudelft.nl/8e79t/ \nPanel: James Gross (Chair)\, Tor Ericson (AFRY)\, Raksha Ramkrishna (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nEdge Intelligence: The Surprises\, Risks and Lessons \nABSTRACT: Similar to the transition from Cloud to Cloud Intelligence\, we are witnessing a fast evolution from the Internet of Things to the Internet of Intelligent Things (IoIT). The IoIT paves the way to a programmable infrastructure that can consolidate the power of the Cloud and distributed computing resources to enhance performance\, resilience\, and quality of experience for users. The envisioned programmable infrastructure has the potential to bring our society to the next level\, by making it more intelligent\, more sustainable\, healthier\, and forging innovations in numerous fields such as autonomous driving\, smart energy\, logistics\, and e-health. \nBehind the curtains\, one of the key enablers for this vision is Edge Intelligence – a powerful combination of edge computing and artificial intelligence. This talk will present my investigations on Edge Intelligence with a system flavor. Besides sharing my first-hand experience of system design and development\, the talk will reveal several pitfalls and lessons learned through live cases. The goal is twofold: 1) to disclose blind spots and interesting directions that deserve further investigations in our community\, and 2) to share my observations on doing system research in such “buzzword bingo” domain\, especially what could hinder us from transferring the mostly fun system work into solid scientific outcome. \nDates in the Seminar Series include: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June

Especially over the past decade\, individual advances in sensing\, actuation\, computation\, communication\, and control have given rise to an unprecedented proliferation of applications in domains ranging from increasingly autonomous vehicles to medical cyber-physical systems to real-time hybrid physical/simulated systems.  With this progress\, however\, come further technical challenges that must be addressed to sustain such technical evolution and impact. \nThis talk will first describe selected recent advances in real-time scheduling theory\, their realization within real-time virtualization and concurrency platforms and middleware\, and limitations of the state of the art that remain even with those advances.  It will then suggest promising combinations of those advances\, which if fully integrated may launch a new generation of adaptive real-time systems that can respond dynamically to changing demands\, while still maintaining assurance of correct timing behavior.  Finally\, this talk will describe open problems and suggest candidate approaches towards addressing them\, to achieve such a synthesis of techniques\, and the potential impacts that can have. \nDates in the Seminar Series include: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Machine Learning Systems: On-Device AI and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Autumn they will be on-line\, and all are welcome to join. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members.\nNic Lane\nThe third speaker in our series is Assoc.Prof Nic Lane\, Head of the Machine Learning Systems Lab at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Samsung AI Centre. You can read more here: http://niclane.org/ \nThe talk is entitled “Machine Learning Systems: On-Device AI and Beyond” (abstract below).\nPanel: György Dán (Chair)\, Diarmuid Corcoran (Ericsson)\, Elena Dubrova (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nABSTRACT: Mobile and embedded devices increasingly rely on locally executing deep neural networks to understand the world — a formerly impossible feat that would have overwhelmed their system resources just a few years ago. The age of on-device artificial intelligence is now upon us; but incredibly\, these dramatic changes are just the beginning. Looking ahead\, machine learning on IoT devices will extend beyond simply classifying categories and perceptual tasks\, to performing roles that alter how every part of the systems stack of smart device function. This next evolution in constrained-resource computing will finally produce devices that meet our expectations in how they can learn\, reason and react to the real-world. In this talk\, I will briefly discuss the initial breakthroughs that allowed us to reach this point\, and outline a number of looming open problems we must overcome to bring about this next phase in the deep transformation of mobile and embedded computing. \nBIO: Nic Lane (http://niclane.org) is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge where he leads the Machine Learning Systems Lab (CaMLSys — http://http://mlsys.cst.cam.ac.uk/). Alongside his academic role\, he is also a Director (On-Device and Distributed Machine Learning) at the Samsung AI Center in Cambridge. Until May 2020\, Nic was an Associate Professor in the Computer Science department at the University of Oxford. Earlier in his career\, Nic held dual appointments at University College London (UCL) and Nokia Bell Labs. Of late\, Nic research has specialized in the study of efficient machine learning under computational constraints\, and over the last five years he has pioneered a range of embedded and mobile forms of deep learning. More generally\, Nic’s research interests revolve around the modelling and systems challenges that arise when computers collect and reason over various types of complex real-world multi-modal sensor data. Nic has received multiple best paper awards\, including ACM/IEEE IPSN 2017 and two from ACM UbiComp (2012 and 2015). In 2018 and 2019\, he (and his co-authors) received the ACM SenSys Test-of-Time award and ACM SIGMOBILE Test-of-Time award for pioneering research\, performed during his PhD thesis\, that devised machine learning algorithms used today on devices like smartphones. Nic served as the PC-chair of ACM MobiSys 2019\, a role he has performed also for ACM HotMobile and ACM SenSys in the past. Most recently\, Nic is the 2020 ACM SIGMOBILE Rockstar award winner for his contributions to “the understanding of how resource-constrained mobile devices can robustly understand\, reason and react to complex user behaviors and environments through new paradigms in learning algorithms and system design.” Prior to moving to England\, Nic spent 4-years at Microsoft Research based in Beijing as a Lead Researcher. He received his PhD from Dartmouth College in 2011. Nic also received an M.Eng from Cornell University (2004) and a B.Sc (Hons) from the University of Waikato (2001). \nDates in the Seminar Series include: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June

SUMMARY:Research Forum (Workshop 1)
DESCRIPTION:Culture for innovation\nSuccessful organisations are characterised by a high level of psychological safety\, i.e. a culture where it is possible to take interpersonal risk without any negative consequences. This is needed to create a culture where one can share criticism\, keep an open mind\, listen to each other\, and show social sensitivity – all of which are essential to build collective intelligence and leverage on diversity. \nThe aim of the TECoSA Research Forum is to build a collaborative culture within the Center and help each other to develop our research and innovation skills.  We will do this in steps: \n\nDuring the first interactive online workshop on 20 November\, teams of graduate students will be trained on how to build a research and innovation culture for high collective intelligence as well as learn a method to elaborate and develop their research questions.\nAfter the workshop\, peer-coached teams will continue the learning journey in biweekly meetings.\nThe winter session concludes with a second interactive online workshop on 11 March 2021.\n\nKey focus points:\n‣ How do I create psychological safety?\n‣ How do I help to create collective intelligence?\n‣ Build questioning\, observing\, networking and experimenting capabilities to surface new ideas and research questions. \nFacilitator: Martin Karlsson (martink9@kth.se)

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Human-Robot Collaborative Assembly
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Autumn they will be on-line\, and all are welcome to join. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members.\nLihui Wang\nThe second speaker in our series is Professor Lihui Wang\, Chair of Sustainable Manufacturing at KTH\, and Chairman of the Swedish Production Academy\, as well as President of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution (NAMRI). For example\, in human-robot collaborative assembly\, robots are often required to dynamically change their pre-planned tasks to collaborate with human operators in a shared workspace. However\, the robots used today are controlled by pre-generated rigid codes that cannot support effective human-robot collaboration. In response to this need\, multi-modal yet symbiotic communication and control methods have been developed. These methods include voice processing\, gesture recognition\, haptic interaction\, and brainwave perception. Deep learning is used for recognition\, classification\, and context awareness identification. Within this context\, this seminar provides an overview of the current status of human-robot collaboration including its classification\, characteristics and definition. The focus is placed on the latest advancement on multi-modal robot control and in-situ operator assistance. At the end of the talk\, remaining challenges and future research directions are highlighted. \nDates in the Seminar Series include: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June

See the Biography below\, and read more about his research at: https://people.cs.umu.se/elmroth/ \nPanel: Martin Törngren (Chair)\, Lars-Berno Fredriksson (Kvaser)\, Elena Fersman (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nEdge computing concepts\, motivations\, and challenges\nABSTRACT: Edge computing is a distributed computing paradigm which brings computation and data storage closer to the location where it is produced or needed\, to improve response times\, save bandwidth\, or enforce data locality policies. The concept is still in rapid development and under constant change\, but as a general principle it combines remote mega-scale cloud datacenters with virtually unlimited capacity\, rather small regional datacenters\, and local edge nodes with very limited capacity and tough power constraints. Typically\, the large and regional datacenters comprise mainly general-purpose hardware whereas edge nodes tend to be more heterogeneous and tailored for particular applications. \nDrivers for edge cloud development are\, e.g.\, latency-critical industrial IoT applications with machine-to-machine interaction and data-intensive applications where massive data volumes of only local relevance are produced and processed. \nAlthough early edge clouds are already being deployed\, it is still to be seen what will be the dominating deployments and who will be the winning stakeholders\, as\, e.g.\, both cloud datacenter provides are interested to broaden their services to cover also the last mile whereas telecom providers see opportunities to extend their services beyond sending bits and bytes. Moreover\, hand-in-hand with edge cloud developments is the development of the 5G infrastructure\, with virtualized network functions running alongside edge cloud applications. \nFrom a scientific point of view\, the edge clouds come with numerous challenges\, e.g.\, regarding how to design and efficiently operate the infrastructure and manage applications in a geographically distributed multi-stakeholder infrastructure; what programming models to use; how to address the new security and privacy challenges; etc. \nBIOGRAPHY: Erik Elmroth is Professor in Computing Science and Head of the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University. He is leading the Umeå University research on distributed systems\, focusing on the autonomous management of ICT resources\, spanning from individual servers to large scale cloud datacenters\, federated clouds\, highly distributed edge clouds\, and software-defined infrastructures. Elmroth’s has been principal investigator for numerous large-scale projects including\, e.g.\, the VR framework grant project Cloud Control\, the eSSENCE strategic research program\, several EU FP7 and H2020 projects\, an 8 postdoc project in autonomous systems funded by the Kempe Foundations\, etc. \nElmroth’s extensive leadership experience includes over ten years as Head and Deputy Head of department and 13 years as Deputy Director for a national supercomputer center (HPC2N). International experiences include a year at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\, University of California\, Berkeley\, and one semester at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, Cambridge\, MA. \nElmroth is member of the Swedish Royal Academy for Engineering Sciences and vice chair for its section on Information Technology. Previously\, he has chaired the Board of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC)\, the VR’s expert group on e-science infrastructures and been member of VR’s Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI). He has also produced two international research strategies for the Nordic Council of Ministers. He received the Nordea Scientific Award 2011 and the SIAM Linear Algebra Prize 2000. \nElmroth is founder and chair of the Cloud Control Workshops series (www.cloudresearch.org/workshops). He is also co-founder of Elastisys AB. \nDates in the Seminar Series include: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June
