SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Autonomous self-organized edge IoT intelligent systems – research directions
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar on the first Thursday of each month during term-time. For Spring 2022\, the talks will be on-line or hybrid. All are welcome to attend and we look forward to some lively discussions. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nWe kick-off 2022 with a talk by Dr Ovidiu Vermesan\, Chief Scientist at SINTEF Digital.  The session will be chaired by Martin Törngren\, and given in Zoom. \nAutonomous self-organized edge IoT intelligent systems – research directions \nABSTRACT: IoT and edge computing offer new ways of using computational resources\, enabling the push of computation\, processing\, and analytics to the edge of the network and close to data sources. Edge processing embedded in IoT devices is enhanced by artificial intelligence and cognitive technologies\, involving sensing/actuation\, learning and reasoning on distributed data and across the edge continuum. This new paradigm for addressing the collective behavior of decentralized\, self-organized IoT systems requires a different innovation perspective and research directions. The presentation will give an overview of the future trends of edge intelligence technologies focusing on IoT roadmaps. \nBIO: Dr Ovidiu Vermesan holds a PhD degree in microelectronics and a Master of International Business (MIB) degree. He is Chief Scientist at SINTEF DIGITAL\, Oslo\, Norway. His research interests are in the area of embedded electronics\, smart sensor systems\, cognitive-communication systems\, intelligent edge processing and IoT technology. Dr Vermesan received SINTEF’s award for research excellence for his work on implementing a biometric sensor system. He is currently working with projects addressing integrated autonomous systems\, intelligent connectivity\, cognition systems\, security\, artificial intelligence for digitizing industry\, edge computing\, and IoT. He has authored or co-authored over 85 technical articles and conference papers. He is actively involved in different European partnerships activities. Dr Vermesan has coordinated and managed various national\, EU and other international large-scale projects covering applications in green mobility\, manufacturing\, energy\, and smart environments. He coordinates the IoT European Research Cluster (IERC) and is the Chair of the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation – AIOTI IoT Research and Partnerships working group. Dr Vermesan has recently co-edited a new book on “Artificial Intelligence for Digitising Industry – Applications” that provides in-depth insights into use cases implementing artificial intelligence (AI) applications at the edge and the transition to Industry 5.0.

Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \n\n \n          Amy Loutfi \n\nWe end  the seminar series for 2021 with a talk by Prof Amy Loutfi\, Head of the AASS Machine Perception and Interaction Lab and Pro-Vice Chancellor at Örebro University.  Please see the abstract and short biography below.  To read more about the lab and Prof Loutfi’s research\, please see: https://mpi.aass.oru.se/ and https://www.oru.se/english/employee/amy_loutfi \nPanel: Iolanda Leite (Chair)\,  Rafia Inam (Ericsson)\, Alexis Linard (KTH) \nSemantics for Robotics \nABSTRACT: As humans and robots start to cohabit the same environment and interact deeper with each other\, the need for robots and other artificial agents to truly understand human instruction increases. This understanding not only involves the ability for robots to decode human speech\, but also the ability to ground words that refer to physical objects\, actions\, and concepts –  to the perceptual information coming from the sensors embedded on the agent. This challenge in part deals with the symbol grounding problem\, that is\, how to ground symbols into something other than symbols.  Further with the advent of advances within representation learning\, due to many of the advances within sub-symbolic architectures there has been an opportunity to examine how the grounding can be learned using large (and simulated) datasets. This talk will highlight the research at Örebro University where semantics are learned\, integrated and used for robotic systems. \nBIO: Amy Loutfi graduated as an electrical engineer from the University of New Brunswick in Canada in 2001.  She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2006 with a research topic in machine perception. Specifically\, she researched about how gas sensors could be integrated onto robotic platforms and how these robots can interact with humans in order to solve a range of problems that required sensing and perception. She has since broadened her research interests to include general research directions within machine perception\, where AI methods like Machine learning are used for the interpretation of sensor data. She also has broadened her research in the area of Human Robot Interaction where she has studied HRI in various platforms that include fully autonomous robots\, but also teleoperated robots. She has a long experience working with industry and the public sector on research projects dealing with AI\, robotics and human-robot interaction. \nIn addition to her research\, Amy is a leader on strategic issues in artificial intelligence for Sweden. She is co-director of WASP\, the Wallenberg AI\, Autonomous Systems and Software Program and is involved in both AI Sweden and AI Competence of Sweden. She is also part of Sweden’s Restart Commission with a focus digitalization and where the mandate includes the development a legal framework for the use of AI. She takes on these initiatives as part of her role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for AI at Örebro University.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s SCSSS takes place at Lindholmspiren in Gothenburg\, 23-24 November 2021.  (If you would like to submit a proposal for a presentation or tutorial\, the deadline is 23 April – see http://safety.addalot.se/2021/call-for-presentations for more details!) \nThis conference\, organised by Addalot\, ICES (KTH) and SAFER\,  has become the central meeting place for Scandinavian safety experts from different industries. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \nMing Cao \nOur third speaker this autumn is Prof Ming Cao from the Engineering and Technology Institute at the University of Groningen.  Please see the abstract and short biography below.  To read more about his research\, please see:  https://www.rug.nl/staff/m.cao/research \nPanel: Lei Feng (Chair)\,  Haydn Thompson (THHINK)\, Sonja Buchegger (KTH) \nPrivacy-preserving Dynamic Controllers  \nABSTRACT: With the fast development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing\, privacy concerns of the gathering\, processing and using of data have become a central research topic. As a quantitative criterion for privacy of “mechanisms” in the form of data-generating processes\, the concept of differential privacy was first proposed in computer science and has later been applied to linear control systems. In fact\, differential privacy can be further studied taking into account properties of dynamical systems\, and then be utilized for controller design. In this talk\, I first clarify that a classical concept in systems and control\, input observability (sometimes referred to as left invertibility)\, has a strong connection with differential privacy. In particular\, I show that the Gaussian mechanism can be made highly differentially private by adding small noise if the corresponding system is less input observable. Then I discuss a method to design dynamic controllers for the classic tracking control problem while addressing privacy concerns. We call the obtained controller through our design method the privacy-preserving controller. The usage of such controllers is further explained by the new insight into the trade-off between control performance and privacy level. \nBIO:  Since 2016\, Ming Cao has been a professor of networks and robotics at the Engineering and Technology Institute (ENTEG) at the University of Groningen\, the Netherlands\, where he started as an assistant professor in 2008.  He received the Bachelor degree in 1999 and the Master degree in 2002 from Tsinghua University\, Beijing\, China\, and the Ph.D. degree in 2007 from Yale University\, New Haven\, CT\, USA\, all in Electrical Engineering.   From September 2007 to August 2008\, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University\, USA. He worked as a research intern during the summer of 2006 with the Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center\, NY\, USA. \nHe is the 2017 and inaugural recipient of the Manfred Thoma medal from the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the 2016 recipient of the European Control Award sponsored by the European Control Association (EUCA). He is a Senior Editor for Systems and Control Letters\, an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control\, and was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems and IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine. He is a member of the IFAC Conference Board and a vice chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Large-Scale Complex Systems. His research interests include autonomous agents and multi-agent systems\, complex networks and decision-making processes.

SUMMARY:Creating an Innovation Eco-system
DESCRIPTION:Professor Kim Wikström will share his insights into how to create an innovation eco-system for TECoSA.  All partners are encouraged to join\, and all members with an interest are most welcome.  There will be a Teams link circulated to interested parties and also the opportunity to meet in real life at KTH. \nA working group will be set up to follow up on this seminar\, and use the learnings to update TECoSA’s Research Agenda. \n  \nWe will during the introduction learn and discuss the concept of innovation ecosystems and how to lead and enable transformation for systems of systems. We will discuss the connection between innovation ecosystems and system innovation and the challenges we can face in involving several organizations and how to overcome these challenges. How can we capture and visualize the relevant ecosystem and how do we analyze lock-ins that stops the implementation of new innovations. A few case studies are presented to clarify lessons learned and to inspire TECoSA to the concept. \n

Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \n\n             Rong SU \n\n\nThe series continues with a presentation from Dr Rong Su\, Associate Professor at the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University.  Please see the abstract and short biography below; and you can read more about his research at: https://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/rsu/ \nPanel: Lei Feng (Chair)\, Panagiotis Papadimitratos and Henrik Sandberg \nResilient Supervisory Control Against Smart Cyberattacks in Discrete-Event Dynamic Systems\nABSTRACT: With the continuous advancement of ICT\, we are enjoying unprecedented connectivity around the world. However\, the threat of cyberattacks has more frequently become the center of attention\, which has been attracting lots of research from different communities\, including the discrete-event system community\, where different attack models are conjectured and analyzed\, upon which relevant defense techniques have been proposed. Considering the diversity of cyberattacks on discrete-event systems\, in this talk I will focus on a special type called “smart” attacks\, which\, if exist\, will not be detected by the supervisor until an unstoppable process takes place that may lead to damage. An attack may be applied either to an observation channel\, or to a command channel\, or to both simultaneously. After introducing some models of observation and command channel attacks\, I will describe\, from an attacker’s point of view\, how to synthesize a smart attack strategy. Sufficient and necessary conditions will be given to ensure the existence of such a strategy. It turns out that the synthesis of an attack-resilient supervisor is more challenging\, owing to not only complexity concerns\, but also possible undecidability of solution existence in a general setup. Nevertheless\, for a special observation-channel attack\, where an attacker only aims for possible but not necessarily assured damage\, captured by the concept of weak attackability\, the existence of a resilient supervisor is decidable. \nBIO: Dr Su’s research interests include multi-agent systems\, discrete-event system theory\, model-based fault diagnosis\, cyber security analysis and synthesis\, control and optimization of complex networks with applications in flexible manufacturing\, intelligent transportation\, human-robot interface\, power management and green building. In the aforementioned areas he has more than 180 journal and conference publications\, 2 granted US/Singapore patents\, and 5 technical disclosures\, and has been involved in several projects sponsored by Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF)\, Singapore Agency of Science\, Technology and Research (A*STAR)\, Singapore Ministry of Education (MoE)\, Singapore Civil Aviation Authority (CAAS) and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Dr Su is a senior member of IEEE\, and an associate editor for Automatica (IFAC)\, Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems: Theory and Applications\, and Journal of Control and Decision. He is also the Chair of the Technical Committee on Smart Cities in the IEEE Control Systems Society.

SUMMARY:17th ACACES International Summer School
DESCRIPTION:The 17th International Summer School on Advanced Computer Architecture and Compilation for High-Performance and Embedded Systems takes place in Fiuggi\, Italy from Sunday 12 – Saturday 18 September 2021 https://www.hipeac.net/acaces/2021/ \nThe ACACES Summer School is a one-week summer school for computer architects and tool builders working in the field of embedded systems\, high performance computer architecture\, and compilation. The school aims at the dissemination of advanced scientific knowledge and the promotion of international contacts among scientists from academia and industry. A distinguishing feature of this Summer School is its broad scope ranging from low-level technological issues to advanced compilation techniques and entrepreneurship. In the design of modern computer systems one has to be knowledgeable about architecture as well as about the quality of the code\, and how to improve it. This summer school offers the ideal mix of the two worlds\, both at the entry level and at the most advanced level. \nThe ACACES Summer School is organized by the HiPEAC Network (www.HiPEAC.net) in collaboration with the TETRAMAX Innovation Action (www.tetramax.eu)\, but it is open to everybody. However\, previous training and/or experience in computer science as well as a background in computer architecture or compilation is indispensable. In order to have a good mix of senior and junior participants\, the school also encourages senior researchers and professors to participate. \nThe Summer School will take place in Fiuggi\, a small town near Rome\, Italy. Students and lecturers will be accommodated in private hotel rooms with standard hotel accommodation. There will be many opportunities for interaction among the participants\, both in and out of the classrooms\, during the meals\, at the bar or at the swimming pool\, in the fitness room\, in the spa and in the city. Long after-the-lecture discussions are one of the major assets of this summer school. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \n\n\nRoss Anderson \n\n\n\n\nThis Autumn\, we are pleased to kick off the Seminar Series with a presentation from Ross Anderson\, Professor of Security Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge. \nPanel: Elena Dubrova (Chair)\, Daniel Wengelin (SAAB)\, György Dán (KTH) \nSecurity Engineering and Machine Learning\nABSTRACT: Statistical machine-learning techniques have been used in security applications for over 20 years\, starting with spam filtering\, fraud engines and intrusion detection. In the process we have become familiar with attacks from poisoning to polymorphism\, and issues from redlining to snake oil. The neural network revolution has recently brought many people into ML research who are unfamiliar with this history\, so it should surprise nobody that many new products are insecure. In this talk I will describe some recent research projects where we examine whether we should try to make machine-vision systems robust against adversarial samples\, or fragile enough to detect them when they appear; whether adversarial samples have constructive uses; how we can do service-denial attacks on neural-network models; on the need to sanity-check outputs; and on the need to sanitise inputs.  We need to shift the emphasis from the design of “secure” ML classifiers\, to the design of secure systems that use ML classifiers as components. \nBIO: Ross Anderson is Professor of Security Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge. He is widely recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on security. In 2015 he won the Lovelace Medal\, Britain’s top award in computing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He is one of the pioneers of the economics of information security\, peer-to-peer systems\, API analysis and hardware security. SUMMARY:Summer School on Systems Architecting (Utö)
DESCRIPTION:TECoSA partner Syntell has organized a one-week Summer School during the third week of August since 1999!  This takes place on on the island of Utö from 15-20 August\, and includes three parallel courses related to lifecycle management of complex systems.  Aimed at practitioners and PhD students\,  participants come mainly from major Scandinavian industries and public authorities\, see https://www.syntell.se/en/summerschool2021/ \nIt is an intense week packed with learning as well social activities in a inspiring environment. As one former participant said: “Long hours\, no time to get bored”.  This year we have taken a number of measures in response to the pandemic. We have reduced the numbers of participants per course\, so 2021 is somewhat an “executive version”. \nAs of 9 August\, we have a last-minute opening on the Systems Architecting Fundamentals course.   Given the short notice\, TECOSA colleagues wishing to join are offered a special 50% discount  (22 375kr instead of 44 750kr all inclusive). \nIf you are interested\, please contact Tom Strandberg ASAP!   If you want more information or references from previous participants (now more than 1100) you can also contact Tom.

Forming such eco-systems will often face significant hurdles in terms of organizational\, legislative and business model concerns\, in addition to technical issues. This interactive session brings together a number of perspectives and experts to discuss the corresponding challenges\, experiences and avenues ahead for overcoming such hurdles\, including (but not limited to)\, data sharing\, best practices for accelerating innovation across (previously) separated domains\, and experiences in multi-domain collaborations and open test arenas. \nExtended session description: Digitalization\, and more generally cyber-physical systems\, pave the way for new services and collaborations through new cost-efficient sensors\, connectivity\, data sharing\, (decentralized/ centralized) computation\, and sometimes also decentralized manufacturing/maintenance enabled by 3d printing. The resulting new capabilities provide the potential for developing entirely new applications and business offerings\, within and across existing domains\, giving rise to new eco-systems. \nAs an example\, consider the case of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). An ITS can be developed to provide proactive behaviors including the avoidance of cracks and pot-holes in roads (through data collection\, analysis\, digital twins and proactive maintenance and/or influenced vehicle behaviors)\, thereby optimizing and reducing efforts\, emissions and energy for road repairs\, and moreover improving traffic safety. Of course\, the potential does not stop here\, and extends to energy optimization and traffic efficiency. The example highlights the opportunity to share data between two separate domains\, in this case road infrastructure and road traffic. Combining the data (for example that gathered during road construction\, by automated vehicles and infrastructure) with vehicle/ infrastructure computational capabilities for learning\, prediction\, planning and coordination\, enables new functionalities and services in the ITS. However\, this requires that multiple stakeholder can form constructive collaborations. \nForming such systems of systems will often face significant hurdles in terms of organizational\, legislative and business model concerns\, in addition to technical interoperability and trustworthiness issues.
