SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Next generation IoT: Europe‘s opportunity of Open Edge Computing Platforms
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar on the first Thursday of each month during term-time. For Spring 2022\, the talks will be on-line or hybrid. All are welcome to attend and we look forward to some lively discussions. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur April seminar is with Rolf Riemenschneider\, Head of Sector “Internet of Things”\, DG CONNECT\, European Commission. The session will be chaired by Martin Törngren\, and given in Zoom. \nABSTRACT:  Next generation IoT and Edge Computing are driven by a paradigm shift towards decentralised intelligence\, local and swarm computing. Edge computing offers new ways of using computational rexources\, enabling to move computation\, processing and analytics to the edge of the network and close to the place where data is generated. The new paradigm is characterised by advances in embedded and AI processors\, local decision making and reasoning on distributed data and across the computing continuum\, from IoT to edge to cloud.  The new paradigm requires a different research and innovation perspective in terms of management across the computing continuum\, programming environments for distributed IoT systems and an open platform model to deliver the integration of different edge technologies but also a business execution model that can offer the potential to accelerate market adoption and scale. \nThe presentation will focus on the strategic approach taken to support research and innovation technologies ‘From Cloud to Edge to IoT’ under the European Horizon Europe programme.  For more details\, see https://www.ngiot.eu/from-cloud-to-edge-to-iot-for-european-data/ \nBIO: Rolf Riemenschneider is involved in the research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 where he gained experience in research and innovation project management and European policies in the following areas: Advanced Computing\, Cyber Physical Systems\, Factories of the Future and Internet of Things. From 2009-2015\, he managed the ICT activities of the Public-Private Partnership Factories of the Future (PPP FOF). Since 2015\, he coordinates the cross-cutting activities  related to Internet of Things in Horizon 2020  across different policy streams with DG AGRI\, DG ENER\, DG MOVE and DG GROW. \nInside DG Connect\, he leads the research\, innovation and deployment of the next generation of the IoT with strong computing capacity at the edge exploring features like device virtualisation\, interoperability\, real-time\, energy efficiency and distributed intelligence. As an emerging innovation domain\, his key objective is to establish European supply and value chains in cloud to edge to IoT applications and the tactile internet by integrating relevant elements of computing\, connectivity\, IoT and AI. \nOne of the key horizontal activities related to achieving the targets of the Green Deal\, encompasses the Digitisation of the Energy System\, which includes IoT-driven interoperable solutions and products\, available especially in the home and buildings\, to enable an increased flexibility in energy consumption\, foster the integration of renewable energy\, and flexible charging of electric vehicles as well as  innovative application and services across sectors like home\, building\, energy and mobility.

These scenarios call for much lower latencies while simultaneously emphasizing the reliability of transmissions. It is especially potent in modern MR branches such as argumentation\, constraint and logic programming\, and planning. SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - A Data\, Information and Time model for Distributed real-time computer systems

Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nThe March talk (*moved slightly to accommodate sportlov) is given by Prof Hermann Kopetz\, Vienna University of Technology.  The session will be chaired by Martin Törngren\, and given as a hybrid option (you can join in Zoom or at KTH Campus).  This seminar will be held in collaboration with Digital Futures: Distinguished lecture: Prof Hermann Kopetz\, Vienna University of Technology — Digital Futures (kth.se) \nThe Data\, Information\, and Time (DIT) Model \nABSTRACT:  This seminar aims to present a model that clarifies the semantics behind the terms data\, information and their relations to the passage of real time. According to the DIT model a data item is a symbol the signifier of which  appears as a pattern (e.g. visual\, sound\, gesture\, or any bit pattern) in physical space.  The signifier of the symbol is generated by a human or a machine in the current contextual situation and is linked to a concept in the human mind or a set of operations of a machine as its signified.  An information item delivers the sense or the idea that a human mind extracts out of a given natural language proposition that is composed of meaningful data items. Since the given tangible\, intangible and temporal context are part of the explanation of a data item\, a change of context can have an effect on the meaning of data and the sense of a proposition. The DIT model provides a framework to show how the flow of time can change the truth-value of a proposition. Prof Kopetz compares the notions of data\, information\, and time in differing contexts: in human communication\, in the operation of a computer system and in a biological system.  In the final section\, he will present a simple example to demonstrate how the lessons learned from the DIT-model can help to reduce the complexity and improve the design of a real-time computer system. \nBIO:Hermann Kopetz is a professor emeritus at Vienna University of Technology. He was named an IEEE Fellow in 1994 for contributions to fault-tolerant\, real-time systems. DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar on the first Thursday of each month during term-time. For Spring 2022\, the talks will be on-line or hybrid. All are welcome to attend and we look forward to some lively discussions. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nWe kick-off 2022 with a talk by Dr Ovidiu Vermesan\, Chief Scientist at SINTEF Digital.  The session will be chaired by Martin Törngren\, and given in Zoom. \nAutonomous self-organized edge IoT intelligent systems – research directions \nABSTRACT: IoT and edge computing offer new ways of using computational resources\, enabling the push of computation\, processing\, and analytics to the edge of the network and close to data sources. Edge processing embedded in IoT devices is enhanced by artificial intelligence and cognitive technologies\, involving sensing/actuation\, learning and reasoning on distributed data and across the edge continuum. This new paradigm for addressing the collective behavior of decentralized\, self-organized IoT systems requires a different innovation perspective and research directions. The presentation will give an overview of the future trends of edge intelligence technologies focusing on IoT roadmaps. \nBIO: Dr Ovidiu Vermesan holds a PhD degree in microelectronics and a Master of International Business (MIB) degree. He is Chief Scientist at SINTEF DIGITAL\, Oslo\, Norway. His research interests are in the area of embedded electronics\, smart sensor systems\, cognitive-communication systems\, intelligent edge processing and IoT technology. Dr Vermesan received SINTEF’s award for research excellence for his work on implementing a biometric sensor system. He is currently working with projects addressing integrated autonomous systems\, intelligent connectivity\, cognition systems\, security\, artificial intelligence for digitizing industry\, edge computing\, and IoT. He has authored or co-authored over 85 technical articles and conference papers. He is actively involved in different European partnerships activities. Dr Vermesan has coordinated and managed various national\, EU and other international large-scale projects covering applications in green mobility\, manufacturing\, energy\, and smart environments. He coordinates the IoT European Research Cluster (IERC) and is the Chair of the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation – AIOTI IoT Research and Partnerships working group. Dr Vermesan has recently co-edited a new book on “Artificial Intelligence for Digitising Industry – Applications” that provides in-depth insights into use cases implementing artificial intelligence (AI) applications at the edge and the transition to Industry 5.0.

This understanding not only involves the ability for robots to decode human speech\, but also the ability to ground words that refer to physical objects\, actions\, and concepts –  to the perceptual information coming from the sensors embedded on the agent. This challenge in part deals with the symbol grounding problem\, that is\, how to ground symbols into something other than symbols.  Further with the advent of advances within representation learning\, due to many of the advances within sub-symbolic architectures there has been an opportunity to examine how the grounding can be learned using large (and simulated) datasets. This talk will highlight the research at Örebro University where semantics are learned\, integrated and used for robotic systems. \nBIO: Amy Loutfi graduated as an electrical engineer from the University of New Brunswick in Canada in 2001.  She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2006 with a research topic in machine perception. Specifically\, she researched about how gas sensors could be integrated onto robotic platforms and how these robots can interact with humans in order to solve a range of problems that required sensing and perception. She has since broadened her research interests to include general research directions within machine perception\, where AI methods like Machine learning are used for the interpretation of sensor data. She also has broadened her research in the area of Human Robot Interaction where she has studied HRI in various platforms that include fully autonomous robots\, but also teleoperated robots. She has a long experience working with industry and the public sector on research projects dealing with AI\, robotics and human-robot interaction. \nIn addition to her research\, Amy is a leader on strategic issues in artificial intelligence for Sweden. She is co-director of WASP\, the Wallenberg AI\, Autonomous Systems and Software Program and is involved in both AI Sweden and AI Competence of Sweden. She is also part of Sweden’s Restart Commission with a focus digitalization and where the mandate includes the development a legal framework for the use of AI. She takes on these initiatives as part of her role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for AI at Örebro University.

Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \nMing Cao \nOur third speaker this autumn is Prof Ming Cao from the Engineering and Technology Institute at the University of Groningen.  Please see the abstract and short biography below.  To read more about his research\, please see:  https://www.rug.nl/staff/m.cao/research \nPanel: Lei Feng (Chair)\,  Haydn Thompson (THHINK)\, Sonja Buchegger (KTH) \nPrivacy-preserving Dynamic Controllers  \nABSTRACT: With the fast development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing\, privacy concerns of the gathering\, processing and using of data have become a central research topic. As a quantitative criterion for privacy of “mechanisms” in the form of data-generating processes\, the concept of differential privacy was first proposed in computer science and has later been applied to linear control systems. In fact\, differential privacy can be further studied taking into account properties of dynamical systems\, and then be utilized for controller design. In this talk\, I first clarify that a classical concept in systems and control\, input observability (sometimes referred to as left invertibility)\, has a strong connection with differential privacy. In particular\, I show that the Gaussian mechanism can be made highly differentially private by adding small noise if the corresponding system is less input observable. Then I discuss a method to design dynamic controllers for the classic tracking control problem while addressing privacy concerns. We call the obtained controller through our design method the privacy-preserving controller. The usage of such controllers is further explained by the new insight into the trade-off between control performance and privacy level. \nBIO:  Since 2016\, Ming Cao has been a professor of networks and robotics at the Engineering and Technology Institute (ENTEG) at the University of Groningen\, the Netherlands\, where he started as an assistant professor in 2008.  He received the Bachelor degree in 1999 and the Master degree in 2002 from Tsinghua University\, Beijing\, China\, and the Ph.D. degree in 2007 from Yale University\, New Haven\, CT\, USA\, all in Electrical Engineering.   From September 2007 to August 2008\, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University\, USA. He worked as a research intern during the summer of 2006 with the Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center\, NY\, USA. \nHe is the 2017 and inaugural recipient of the Manfred Thoma medal from the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the 2016 recipient of the European Control Award sponsored by the European Control Association (EUCA). He is a Senior Editor for Systems and Control Letters\, an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control\, and was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems and IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine. He is a member of the IFAC Conference Board and a vice chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Large-Scale Complex Systems. His research interests include autonomous agents and multi-agent systems\, complex networks and decision-making processes.

SUMMARY:Creating an Innovation Eco-system
DESCRIPTION:Professor Kim Wikström will share his insights into how to create an innovation eco-system for TECoSA.  All partners are encouraged to join\, and all members with an interest are most welcome.  There will be a Teams link circulated to interested parties and also the opportunity to meet in real life at KTH. \nA working group will be set up to follow up on this seminar\, and use the learnings to update TECoSA’s Research Agenda. \n  \nWe will during the introduction learn and discuss the concept of innovation ecosystems and how to lead and enable transformation for systems of systems. We will discuss the connection between innovation ecosystems and system innovation and the challenges we can face in involving several organizations and how to overcome these challenges. How can we capture and visualize the relevant ecosystem and how do we analyze lock-ins that stops the implementation of new innovations. A few case studies are presented to clarify lessons learned and to inspire TECoSA to the concept. \n

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Resilient Supervisory Control Against Smart Cyberattacks in Discrete-Event Dynamic Systems

Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \n\n             Rong SU \n\n\nThe series continues with a presentation from Dr Rong Su\, Associate Professor at the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University.  Please see the abstract and short biography below; and you can read more about his research at: https://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/rsu/ \nPanel: Lei Feng (Chair)\, Panagiotis Papadimitratos and Henrik Sandberg \nResilient Supervisory Control Against Smart Cyberattacks in Discrete-Event Dynamic Systems\nABSTRACT: With the continuous advancement of ICT\, we are enjoying unprecedented connectivity around the world. However\, the threat of cyberattacks has more frequently become the center of attention\, which has been attracting lots of research from different communities\, including the discrete-event system community\, where different attack models are conjectured and analyzed\, upon which relevant defense techniques have been proposed. Considering the diversity of cyberattacks on discrete-event systems\, in this talk I will focus on a special type called “smart” attacks\, which\, if exist\, will not be detected by the supervisor until an unstoppable process takes place that may lead to damage. An attack may be applied either to an observation channel\, or to a command channel\, or to both simultaneously. After introducing some models of observation and command channel attacks\, I will describe\, from an attacker’s point of view\, how to synthesize a smart attack strategy. Sufficient and necessary conditions will be given to ensure the existence of such a strategy. It turns out that the synthesis of an attack-resilient supervisor is more challenging\, owing to not only complexity concerns\, but also possible undecidability of solution existence in a general setup. Nevertheless\, for a special observation-channel attack\, where an attacker only aims for possible but not necessarily assured damage\, captured by the concept of weak attackability\, the existence of a resilient supervisor is decidable. \nBIO: Dr Su’s research interests include multi-agent systems\, discrete-event system theory\, model-based fault diagnosis\, cyber security analysis and synthesis\, control and optimization of complex networks with applications in flexible manufacturing\, intelligent transportation\, human-robot interface\, power management and green building. In the aforementioned areas he has more than 180 journal and conference publications\, 2 granted US/Singapore patents\, and 5 technical disclosures\, and has been involved in several projects sponsored by Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF)\, Singapore Agency of Science\, Technology and Research (A*STAR)\, Singapore Ministry of Education (MoE)\, Singapore Civil Aviation Authority (CAAS) and Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Dr Su is a senior member of IEEE\, and an associate editor for Automatica (IFAC)\, Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems: Theory and Applications\, and Journal of Control and Decision. He is also the Chair of the Technical Committee on Smart Cities in the IEEE Control Systems Society.
