SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Deterministic Reactive Software for Embedded\, Edge\, and Cloud Systems
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Spring they will be on-line\, and all are welcome to join. Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members.\nMarten Lohstroh\nThe eighth speaker in our series is Dr Martin Lohstroh of UC Berkeley\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences.  Marten is a postdoctoral researcher advised by Professor Edward A. Lee\, who was also his doctoral adviser. Since obtaining his PhD from Berkeley\, he has remained focused on disproving the dogma that determinism is fundamentally at odds with high performance\, and making the case that time is a valuable and under leveraged abstraction in computing. (https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~marten/) \nPanel: György Dan (Chair)\, Ingemar Söderquist (SAAB)\, Martin Törngren (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nDeterministic Reactive Software for Embedded\, Edge\, and Cloud Systems \nABSTRACT:  Determinism is notoriously hard to achieve in concurrent systems\, and this poses serious challenges to our ability to build confidence in the correctness of their implementation. The growing pervasiveness of networked computing and a trend towards integrating computationally demanding artificial intelligence components into real-time cyber-physical systems (think of robotics\, autonomous vehicles\, etc.) add urgency to this problem. This talk is about a solution in the form of a concurrent programming model called reactors (actors\, revisited)\, that delivers determinism by default. The execution of reactors is underpinned by a temporal model that incorporates a multiplicity of timelines—some logical\, relating to discrete synchronous-reactive ticks\, and some physical\, relating to the passage of wall-clock time. The relationship that reactors establish between events across timelines allows for the construction of programs that react predictably to unpredictable external events. Moreover\, determinism in reactor systems can be maintained in a distributed setting under quantifiable assumptions. We discuss this work through the lens of Lingua Franca (LF)\, a polyglot reactor-oriented coordination language developed in a collaboration between UC Berkeley\, UT Dallas\, TU Dresden\, and Kiel University. SCADA devices and networks are often subject to a wide range of attacks coming from external attackers and/or internal misconfigurations.  Traditional intrusion detection systems are deployed to ensure the security of SCADA systems\, but they often focus on monitoring only one or two levels of network data\, such as traffic or source data\, and continuously generate a large number of alerts without further analyzing them for causal reasoning. \nIn this talk\, we present anomaly detection systems\, such as ED4GAP and EDMOND\, and a causal reasoning framework\, such as CAPTAR. ED4GAP is an efficient edge-based detector for GOOSE-based source data attacks. EDMOND is an edge-based anomaly detector for MODBUS traffic\, which analyzes SCADA network anomalies at all three levels of network traffic data (transport\, protocol\, source data)\, aggregates alerts to decrease the volume of alerts\, and sends aggregated alerts to control center for causal analysis. CAPTAR is a cloud-based causal reasoning framework which correlates and matches aggregated alerts to causal polytrees. Bayesian inference is performed on the causal polytrees to produce a high-level view of the security state of the protected SCADA network. We will discuss the anomaly detection and causal reasoning analyses on attack examples\, and show experimentally that\, using GOOSE\, MODBUS and DNP3 network traffic\, we can do anomaly detection and attack reasoning in real-time. \nJoint work with Dr. Wenyu Ren\, Dr. Tuo Yu\, Dr. Atul Bohara\, Dr. Jordi Ros-Giralt\, Ghada Elbez\, Tim Yardley\, Al Valdes\, Prof. Bill Sanders in the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. \nBIO: Klara Nahrstedt is the Grainger Distinguished Chair of Engineering Professor in the Computer Science Department\, and Director of Coordinated Science Laboratory in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. SUMMARY:The Learning Brain - a session with Anna Tebelius Bodin!
DESCRIPTION:Anna Tebelius Bodin is a Swedish thought-leader on the brain\, with a M.Ed from Harvard University. She has given over 800 talks and published 5 books about the psychology behind learning and well-being.  Last year\, her efforts to spread knowledge about how the brain learns was acknowledged with The 2020 Mensa Award of Sweden. \nOn Thursday 25 March\, Anna will host an interactive session at the TECoSA Research forum. All TECoSA members are welcome to attend. (see Martin Törngren’s Teams invite\, 21.01.22). \nAnna Tebelius Bodin\nDuring the session\, we will explore how the brain absorbs information. We look at what is required to build knowledge and develop skills. Especially over the past decade\, individual advances in sensing\, actuation\, computation\, communication\, and control have given rise to an unprecedented proliferation of applications in domains ranging from increasingly autonomous vehicles to medical cyber-physical systems to real-time hybrid physical/simulated systems.  With this progress\, however\, come further technical challenges that must be addressed to sustain such technical evolution and impact. \nThis talk will first describe selected recent advances in real-time scheduling theory\, their realization within real-time virtualization and concurrency platforms and middleware\, and limitations of the state of the art that remain even with those advances.  It will then suggest promising combinations of those advances\, which if fully integrated may launch a new generation of adaptive real-time systems that can respond dynamically to changing demands\, while still maintaining assurance of correct timing behavior.  Finally\, this talk will describe open problems and suggest candidate approaches towards addressing them\, to achieve such a synthesis of techniques\, and the potential impacts that can have. \nDates in the Seminar Series include: 1 October\, 5 November\, 3 December\, 4 February\, 4 March\, 1 April\, 6 May\, 3 June

You can read more here: http://niclane.org/ \nThe talk is entitled “Machine Learning Systems: On-Device AI and Beyond” (abstract below).\nPanel: György Dán (Chair)\, Diarmuid Corcoran (Ericsson)\, Elena Dubrova (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nABSTRACT: Mobile and embedded devices increasingly rely on locally executing deep neural networks to understand the world — a formerly impossible feat that would have overwhelmed their system resources just a few years ago. The age of on-device artificial intelligence is now upon us; but incredibly\, these dramatic changes are just the beginning. Looking ahead\, machine learning on IoT devices will extend beyond simply classifying categories and perceptual tasks\, to performing roles that alter how every part of the systems stack of smart device function. This next evolution in constrained-resource computing will finally produce devices that meet our expectations in how they can learn\, reason and react to the real-world. In this talk\, I will briefly discuss the initial breakthroughs that allowed us to reach this point\, and outline a number of looming open problems we must overcome to bring about this next phase in the deep transformation of mobile and embedded computing. \nBIO: Nic Lane (http://niclane.org) is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the department of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge where he leads the Machine Learning Systems Lab (CaMLSys — http://http://mlsys.cst.cam.ac.uk/). Alongside his academic role\, he is also a Director (On-Device and Distributed Machine Learning) at the Samsung AI Center in Cambridge. Until May 2020\, Nic was an Associate Professor in the Computer Science department at the University of Oxford. Earlier in his career\, Nic held dual appointments at University College London (UCL) and Nokia Bell Labs. Of late\, Nic research has specialized in the study of efficient machine learning under computational constraints\, and over the last five years he has pioneered a range of embedded and mobile forms of deep learning. More generally\, Nic’s research interests revolve around the modelling and systems challenges that arise when computers collect and reason over various types of complex real-world multi-modal sensor data. Nic has received multiple best paper awards\, including ACM/IEEE IPSN 2017 and two from ACM UbiComp (2012 and 2015). In 2018 and 2019\, he (and his co-authors) received the ACM SenSys Test-of-Time award and ACM SIGMOBILE Test-of-Time award for pioneering research\, performed during his PhD thesis\, that devised machine learning algorithms used today on devices like smartphones. Nic served as the PC-chair of ACM MobiSys 2019\, a role he has performed also for ACM HotMobile and ACM SenSys in the past. Most recently\, Nic is the 2020 ACM SIGMOBILE Rockstar award winner for his contributions to “the understanding of how resource-constrained mobile devices can robustly understand\, reason and react to complex user behaviors and environments through new paradigms in learning algorithms and system design.” Prior to moving to England\, Nic spent 4-years at Microsoft Research based in Beijing as a Lead Researcher. He received his PhD from Dartmouth College in 2011. For example\, in human-robot collaborative assembly\, robots are often required to dynamically change their pre-planned tasks to collaborate with human operators in a shared workspace. However\, the robots used today are controlled by pre-generated rigid codes that cannot support effective human-robot collaboration. In response to this need\, multi-modal yet symbiotic communication and control methods have been developed. These methods include voice processing\, gesture recognition\, haptic interaction\, and brainwave perception. Deep learning is used for recognition\, classification\, and context awareness identification. Within this context\, this seminar provides an overview of the current status of human-robot collaboration including its classification\, characteristics and definition. The focus is placed on the latest advancement on multi-modal robot control and in-situ operator assistance. SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Edge computing concepts\, motivations\, and challenges
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar at kl.15 on the first Thursday of each month. This Autumn they will be via on-line\, and all are welcome to join. See the Biography below\, and read more about his research at: https://people.cs.umu.se/elmroth/ \nPanel: Martin Törngren (Chair)\, Lars-Berno Fredriksson (Kvaser)\, Elena Fersman (KTH) \nPlease email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register! \nEdge computing concepts\, motivations\, and challenges\nABSTRACT: Edge computing is a distributed computing paradigm which brings computation and data storage closer to the location where it is produced or needed\, to improve response times\, save bandwidth\, or enforce data locality policies. The concept is still in rapid development and under constant change\, but as a general principle it combines remote mega-scale cloud datacenters with virtually unlimited capacity\, rather small regional datacenters\, and local edge nodes with very limited capacity and tough power constraints. Typically\, the large and regional datacenters comprise mainly general-purpose hardware whereas edge nodes tend to be more heterogeneous and tailored for particular applications. \nDrivers for edge cloud development are\, e.g.\, latency-critical industrial IoT applications with machine-to-machine interaction and data-intensive applications where massive data volumes of only local relevance are produced and processed. \nAlthough early edge clouds are already being deployed\, it is still to be seen what will be the dominating deployments and who will be the winning stakeholders\, as\, e.g.\, both cloud datacenter provides are interested to broaden their services to cover also the last mile whereas telecom providers see opportunities to extend their services beyond sending bits and bytes. Moreover\, hand-in-hand with edge cloud developments is the development of the 5G infrastructure\, with virtualized network functions running alongside edge cloud applications. \nFrom a scientific point of view\, the edge clouds come with numerous challenges\, e.g.\, regarding how to design and efficiently operate the infrastructure and manage applications in a geographically distributed multi-stakeholder infrastructure; what programming models to use; how to address the new security and privacy challenges; etc. \nBIOGRAPHY: Erik Elmroth is Professor in Computing Science and Head of the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University. He is leading the Umeå University research on distributed systems\, focusing on the autonomous management of ICT resources\, spanning from individual servers to large scale cloud datacenters\, federated clouds\, highly distributed edge clouds\, and software-defined infrastructures. Elmroth’s has been principal investigator for numerous large-scale projects including\, e.g.\, the VR framework grant project Cloud Control\, the eSSENCE strategic research program\, several EU FP7 and H2020 projects\, an 8 postdoc project in autonomous systems funded by the Kempe Foundations\, etc. \nElmroth’s extensive leadership experience includes over ten years as Head and Deputy Head of department and 13 years as Deputy Director for a national supercomputer center (HPC2N). International experiences include a year at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\, University of California\, Berkeley\, and one semester at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, Cambridge\, MA. \nElmroth is member of the Swedish Royal Academy for Engineering Sciences and vice chair for its section on Information Technology. Previously\, he has chaired the Board of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC)\, the VR’s expert group on e-science infrastructures and been member of VR’s Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI). He has also produced two international research strategies for the Nordic Council of Ministers. He received the Nordea Scientific Award 2011 and the SIAM Linear Algebra Prize 2000. \nElmroth is founder and chair of the Cloud Control Workshops series (www.cloudresearch.org/workshops).
