SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Safety Challenges for Automated Vehicles in the Absence of Connectivity
DESCRIPTION:We aim to bring you a TECoSA Seminar on the first Thursday of each month during term-time.  All are welcome to attend and we look forward to some lively discussions. Members can accept the Outlook invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur September seminar is with Dr Akhil Shetty\, postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley Department of Mechanical Systems.  The session will be given via Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267). \nABSTRACT:  Automated vehicles (AVs) are expected to create a future with effortless driving and virtually no traffic accidents. AV companies claim that\, when fully developed\, the technology will eliminate all crashes caused due to human error. Indeed\, AVs will likely avoid the large number of crashes caused by impaired\, distracted or reckless drivers. But there remains a significant proportion of crashes for which no driver is directly responsible. In particular\, the absence of connectivity of an AV with its neighboring vehicles (V2V) and the infrastructure (I2V) leads to a lack of information that can induce such crashes. In this talk\, I will present prototypical examples motivated by the NHTSA pre-crash scenario typology to show that fully autonomous vehicles cannot guarantee safety in the absence of connectivity. Since AV designs today do not require such connectivity\, these crashes would persist in the future. Combining theoretical models and empirical data\, I will also argue why such hazardous scenarios would occur with a significantly high probability. Our work suggests that incorporating connectivity is a prerequisite for a safe AV future.  \nBIO: Akhil Shetty is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley advised by Prof. Kameshwar Poolla and Prof. Pravin Varaiya. He received his B.Tech and M.Tech degrees in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay. Akhil is a recipient of the Berkeley Graduate Fellowship for doctoral studies at UC Berkeley. He received the Best Student Paper Award at ITSC 2020\, and was a finalist for Best Student Paper at ECC 2018 and SPCOM 2014. He is interested in applying tools from optimization\, control\, and statistics to tackle problems in the fields of energy and intelligent transportation systems.

SUMMARY:Boundary Objects within the Discourse on the Development of Complex CPS
DESCRIPTION:Half-way seminar for PhD student Rusyadi Ramli\nThis seminar will present the role of boundary objects\, explore the contextual factors of boundary objects\, and discuss how to design effective boundary objects within the discourse on the co-engineering practice in the development of complex CPS. All with an interest in this topic are welcome to join (Gladan\, Brinellvägen 85\, plan 3). \nThe opponent for this seminar will be Nicolette Lakemond\, Deputy Dean and Professor in Industrial Development at Linköping University\, who will give an invited talk from 13.15-14.15 AI in the Context of Complex Intelligent Systems. \nAbstract for the half-way seminar by Rusyadi Ramli:\nCyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are evolving to become more intelligent\, connected\, and collaborative due to the advancement of technology. Provided with unprecedented capabilities\, these CPS also represent unprecedented complexity and bring new risks beyond classical dependability. As CPS are becoming more complex to realize\, this requires an increasing breadth of knowledge and skills and a stronger emphasis on collaborative engineering (co-engineering) to deal with the multitude of viewpoints involved. \nTo facilitate co-engineering practice\, engineers commonly used artifacts such as architectural frameworks and standards during the development of complex CPS.  These artifacts can be considered as boundary objects\, i.e.\, objects that hold different meanings to several Community of Practice and serve to translate information between them. This research focuses on boundary objects\, (e.g.\, what is the role of boundary objects\, what are the contextual factors of boundary objects\, and how to design effective boundary objects within the discourse on the development of complex CPS). The current results show that the concept of boundary objects within the discourse on the development of complex CPS is not well-defined. Nonetheless\, the results indicate that the concept of\, and the role of\, boundary objects can be identified based on three contextual factors e.g.\, structure\, identity\, and culture.  The results suggest that the concept of boundary object has narrowed down towards matters of structure and identity within the discourse on the development of complex CPS. \nMoreover\, this research indicate that the boundary objects can be categorized into four categories based on two implicit\, orthogonal dimensions present in the discourse\, i.e.\, \n\nboundary objects can be either transparent or opaque\, and\nboundary objects can be either a support to\, or a limiter on\, human activity.\n\nThese categories suggest that the discourses on automation and organisational learning could be used to elicit a deeper understanding of enablers or barriers to boundary objects. \n\n\n\nBio: My research interests fall at the intersection of systems engineering\, engineering design\, and engineering management. Currently\, my research focuses on investigating the role of engineering artefacts to e.g.\, bridge the knowledge gap and promote compromise among different Community of Practices (e.g.\, safety engineers\, cybersecurity engineers\, software engineers) in the development of trustworthy complex systems (e.g.\, connected and automated vehicle\, intelligent transporation systems\, etc). \nSome theories I use for my PhD research include boundary objects\, organizational learning\, and social-practice theory. As for the research methods\, I mainly use field-based methods such as expert interviews and participant observation to conduct my research.

However\, radiation to healthy tissues can cause side effects. Current treatment planning methods use static patient images to modulate radiation beams and do not account for stochastic patient motions\, such as heartbeat and breathing. This can lead to discrepancies between the plan and actual radiation delivery. MR-Linac is a recent breakthrough that allows us to visualize a patient’s anatomy in real-time. However\, traditional dose-based adaptative radiotherapy methods are too slow to compute in real-time. We propose to use reinforcement learning for real-time dose-based adaptive radiotherapy.

One increasingly popular way to approach this challenging problem is through a formal methods framework\, which combines two great advantages: \n(i) The ability to rigorously describe various involved tasks and constraints on the robot’s behavior through temporal logics\, such as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL); and \n(ii) Generic algorithms to compute plans that are correct by design\, i.e. provably satisfy the logic formula. \nDirectly applying techniques from formal methods to multi-agent task planning problems poses several challenges and confronts the designer of such problem solving algorithms with several key design decisions. In this talk\, we explore how to model computational and human actors  coexisting in a shared environment\, each with their own capabilities and goals. We present a unified framework that computes minimal assumptions on the behaviour of human actors and robots and communicates them as least-limiting advisers. \n

The resource-constrained nature of the IoT devices\, different characteristics of IoT tasks such as delay sensitivity\, and heterogeneity of the edge cloud servers make the task offloading problem an important challenge in the edge cloud continuum. Offloading can be defined as a mechanism to move the processing or computation from one device to another with more suitable capabilities. The main goal is to move resource-intensive tasks from a device with limited resources to an edge server or cloud server to achieve performance objectives\, such as reducing overall computation time\, minimizing network resources usage\, maximizing battery life. \nOffloading is a flexible mechanism whose implementation depends on use cases or situations. For this reason\, it is very important to study different application domains and use cases to find out which use cases are the most promising and can get benefit of offloading. In this presentation\, I will explore different application domains and use cases and explain why offloading is beneficial. I will also show an offloading taxonomy that helps to understand that flexibility and identify which are the most relevant offloading configurations for different application domains and use cases. \nOne example could be offloading to support time-critical industrial use cases. However\, to ensure deterministic performance and support timing predictability of real-time applications that utilize the edge-cloud continuum\, more enhancements are required in the computation domain and communication domain. In this case\, I will present our initial plans for our new VINNOVA project\, which is called AORTA. We will develop technologies that allow offloading of real-time services and functionality to the edge and cloud. We will build upon recent advances in 5G and cloud and networking technologies\, as well as cutting-edge research results. The AORTA framework will support a fluid compute model where functionality will be dynamically deployed locally\, at the edge\, or in the cloud and support integration and real-time performance irrespective of where they execute. \nBIO:  Dr. Ali Balador graduated in computer science at the Polytechnic University of Valencia\, where he also achieved his Phd on the topic of wireless communication for vehicular environments in 2016. He held the role of Assistant Professor at Mälardalen University for 5 years. He was a visiting researcher at University of Bologna in Italy\, Halmstad University in Sweden\, and the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Japan. \nAli has a background in a number of industries\, such as automotive\, railway\, healthcare\, and manufacturing but has spent most of his time focusing on the automotive sector\, working in research and development projects where he acted as main technical coordinator or WP leader. He spent 6 years at RISE Research Institute of Sweden where\, he focused on topics such as edge and cloud computing and the combination with artificial intelligence. \nIn April 2022\, he joined Ericsson Research in Sweden in the role of senior researcher and project manager. His own personal research interests include wireless networks\, distributed systems\, cloud and edge computing\, and security & privacy.

In particular\, PPL users can focus on encoding their inference problems\, and need not concern themselves with the intricacies of inference. In the last decade\, PPL-related research have seen a dramatic increase\, with applications in research fields such as evolutionary biology\, epidemiology\, cognitive science\, motion forecasting\, computer vision\, database cleaning\, and inverse graphics. \nIn this seminar\, Daniel will give an introduction to PPLs\, their applications\, and my research. By modeling the task as a collaborative optimal control problem\, Lagrangian methods are widely used to decouple the constraints and enable the decentralized solution. However\, potential constraint-violating behavior will lead to oscillations during the Lagrangian update\, resulting in more iterations and lower real-time efficiency. \nExisting methods generally neither address this shortcoming\, nor explore the Lagrangian update mechanism. This study takes a control perspective\, and solves this collaborative optimal control problem based on an extension of the Alternating Directions Method of Multipliers (ADMM) algorithm by performing the iteration update with a Proportional-Integral- (PI-) regulated controller. The link between the Lagrangian optimization and the PI controller improves the convergence performance during iterations. Simulation results in traffic intersection scenarios demonstrate the advantage of the proposed approach. The preliminary results and future work on its real-time implementation on the 5G testbed will also be discussed.

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Addressing Uncertainty in the Safety Assurance of Machine-Learning

Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur April seminar is with Prof Simon Burton\, Scientifc Director at Fraunhofer IKS.  This will be a Zoom-only event\, and is jointly organized by TECoSA and Digital Futures.  The Zoom link is https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267.\nABSTRACT:  There is increasing interest in the application of machine learning (ML) technologies to safety-critical cyber-physical systems\, with the promise of increased levels of autonomy due to their potential for solving complex perception and planning tasks. However\, demonstrating the safety of ML is seen as one of the most challenging hurdles to their widespread deployment for such applications. In this presentation I explore the factors which make the safety assurance of ML such a challenging task. In particular we address the impact of uncertainty on the confidence in ML safety assurance arguments. I show how this uncertainty is related to complexity in the ML models as well as the inherent complexity of the tasks that they are designed to implement. Based on definitions of categories and severity of uncertainty as well as an exemplary assurance argument structure\, we examine possible defeaters to the assurance claims and consequently how the assurance argument can be made more convincing. The analysis combines an understanding of insufficiencies in machine learning models\, their causes and mitigating measures with a systematic analysis of the types of asserted context\, asserted evidence and asserted inference within the assurance argument. \nThis leads to a systematic identification of requirements on the assurance argument structure as well as supporting evidence. A combination of qualitative arguments combined with quantitative evidence are required to build a robust argument for safety-related properties of ML functions that is continuously refined to reduce residual and emerging uncertainties in the arguments after the function has been deployed. \nThe presentation ends with an outlook on both developments in the standardisation of the safety of AI/ML\, in particular ISO PAS 8800 Road Vehicles – Safety and AI\,  as well as open research topics. \nBIO:  Prof. Dr. Simon Burton graduated in computer science at the University of York\, where he also achieved his Phd on the topic of the verification of safety-critical software in 2001. Simon has a background in a number of industries but has spent the last two decades mainly focusing on the automotive sector\, working in research and development projects as well as leading consulting\, engineering service and product organisations. Most recently\, he held the role of Director of Vehicle Systems Safety at Robert Bosch GmbH where\, amongst other things\, his efforts were focused on developing strategies for ensuring the safety of automated driving systems. \nIn September 2020\, he joined Fraunhofer IKS in the role of scientific director where he steers research strategy into “safe intelligence”. His own personal research interests include the safety assurance of complex\, autonomous systems\, and the safety of machine learning. In addition to his role within Fraunhofer IKS\, he has the role of honorary visiting professor at the University of York where he supports a number of research activities and interdisciplinary collaborations. He is also an active member in various standardization committees\, and is the convenor of the ISO working group ISO/TC 22/SC 32/WG14 with the responsibility for developing an international standard on Safety and AI for road vehicles.

Yet\, alongside this increased presence comes also more opportunities for failures to occur. Such failures can be physical\, technical\, or social and can lead to sometimes severe communication and task breakdowns. In this seminar\, I will cover the role of such failures in shaping (different kinds of) human-robot interactions. I will also discuss different psychological concepts that are especially relevant to assessing and understanding robot failures\, including trust\, robot agency\, and likeability. This research can also be considered in light of the replication crisis\, where different challenges might be encountered by researchers when designing and implementing user studies involving both humans and robots. Consequently\, the seminar will also consider the role of interdisciplinary robotics research in addressing such challenges. \nBIO: Rebecca Stower  is a postdoctoral researcher in the social robotics lab (SORO) at the Division of Robotics\, Perception and Learning at KTH Royal Institution of Technology in Stockholm\, Sweden. Previously\, she worked as a researcher at the Paris8 CHArt Laboratory in collaboration with the Laboratory of Intuitive and Natural Interactions with Teleoperated Robots (INIT) in Montreal. She graduated with her PhD in Psychology in 2021 as part of the ANIMATAS H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie European Training Network (2018-2022). She is interested in the role of failures during human robot interactions\, and how this affects people’s attitudes and behaviours towards robots. They provide defenders a proactive and autonomous security mechanism by engaging the adversaries and influencing their moves to the defender’s advantage. Game theory captures the strategic and self-interested nature of attackers and defenders in cybersecurity. It provides an ideal set of quantitative tools to develop such a framework to analyze and design deception. In this talk\, we first present a taxonomy of deception and counter-deception and understand how they can be conceptualized\, quantified\, and designed or mitigated. Then\, we present a class of dynamic games of incomplete information to capture the fundamental characteristics of deception and demonstrate the applications of game theory and learning in problems such as attack engagement\, lateral movement\, and information manipulation. The talk will also discuss open problems and research challenges that the game theory community can address and contribute with an objective to build a multidisciplinary bridge between game theory and cybersecurity. \nBIO:  Quanyan Zhu received B. Eng. in Honors Electrical Engineering from McGill University in 2006\, M. A. Sc. from the University of Toronto in 2008\, and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2013. After stints at Princeton University\, he is currently an associate professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, New York University (NYU). He is an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) and Center for Cyber Security (CCS) at NYU. He is a recipient of many awards\, including NSF CAREER Award\, NYU Goddard Junior Faculty Fellowship\, NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF)\, NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS)\, and Mavis Future Faculty Fellowships. He spearheaded and chaired INFOCOM Workshop on Communications and Control on Smart Energy Systems (CCSES)\, Midwest Workshop on Control and Game Theory (WCGT)\, and ICRA workshop on Security and Privacy of Robotics. His current research interests include game theory\, machine learning\, cyber deception\, network optimization and control\, smart cities\, Internet of Things\, and cyber-physical systems. He has served as the general chair or the TPC chair of the 7th and the 11th Conference on Decision and Game Theory for Security (GameSec) in 2016 and 2020\, the 9th International Conference on NETwork Games\, COntrol and OPtimisation (NETGCOOP) in 2018\, the 5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Security (ICAIS 2019) in 2019\, and 2020 IEEE Workshop on Information Forensics and Security (WIFS). SUMMARY:How does edge AI change the principles of communications and computing?
DESCRIPTION:A Digital Futures Distinguished lecture with Kaibin Huang from The University of Hong Kong\nAbstract: Data has replaced oil as the world’s most valuable resource. An enormous amount of data is being generated 24/7 by tens of billions of edge devices at the network edge. Their distillation into AI using machine learning algorithms promises to automate practically unlimited IoT applications ranging from autonomous driving to virtual reality. This gives rise to a hot area known as edge intelligence\, a distinctive feature of 6G mobile networks. \nThree questions will be asked to understand the induced paradigm shift in communications:\n1) Is reliable communication always needed?\n2) Is interference always a foe?\n3) Is analogue computing outdated? \nProf Huang will introduce some 6G edge-intelligence technologies that feature communication-computing fusion to find negative answers to these questions. Contrary to previous generations of automotive systems\, common development and safety assurance practises no longer suffice to accommodate the increased system complexity and operational uncertainty inherent to an ADS. This is why we have yet to see a large scale deployment of ADSs on public roads\, despite recent technological progress and the promises made by several high-profile auto-makers. For that purpose\, I have in my research explored the research question: What are efficient strategies for safety assurance of ADSs? In this seminar\, I present my contributions to-date\, wherein some insights I have gained when tackling this research question are collected. In particular\, I divide my contributions into three themes: understanding the completeness of the development and verification task of the ADS; deriving a driving policy for the ADS with respect to quantitative safety requirements while incorporating knowledge from operational data\, and surveying the state-of-the art\, both general methods providing evidence for safety of the ADS as well as assurance methods. Leaning on these insights\, I present my intended next steps of my thesis: my intended research direction and the proposed research questions to guide me through to the dissertation. More specifically\, I intend to merge the existing approach of dynamic risk assessment\, wherein the decisions of the ADS are conditioned on the current operating conditions; and the precautionary safety approach\, where quantitative safety requirements are fulfilled through a probabilistic view of risk. Thereby\, I hope to provide an assurance approach that is both effective and efficient by considering risk\, from a statistical standpoint\, while\, in run-time\, conditionally deriving appropriate actions based on the experienced operating conditions of the ADS. \nThe presentation will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Mario Trapp\, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems at IKS (Munich\, Germany).    \nBIO:  Magnus Gyllenhammar pursues a PhD at KTH Royal Institute of Technology as part of his employment at Zenseact in Gothenburg. His research focuses on finding efficient strategies for safety argumentation of ADSs\, especially focusing on dynamic risk assessment in relation to the fulfilment of a quantitative risk norm. He received a MSc. in Engineering Physics\, major in Complex Adaptive System\, from Chalmers University of Technology\, in 2016. In 2018 he joined Zenseact (then Zenuity) and has since worked on creating and realising data-driven strategies for verification and safety argumentation of ADSs.

Mostly\, however\, it is just used as a modern label for existing dependability concepts. But resilience is much more than that. It stands for the property of a system to optimize utility whilst preserving safety in uncertain contexts. This means  a tremendous change of principles. Resilience is about building flexible structures that are capable to adapt to even unforeseen contexts by changing their structure and their behavior – it is the goal to optimize utility whilst preserving safety\, it is not the goal to preserve a fixed structure and behavior that were specified a-priori without knowing the contexts the system would have to face. To this end\, systems must become aware of their own state and context and adapt themselves\, i.e. yielding real resilience requires self-adaptivity\, which comes along with a long list of challenges if it comes to safety-critical systems. \nThis talk will therefore provide a deeper insight into the concept of resilience\, how it differs from classical dependability\, and how to engineer resilient systems in safety-critical applications. To this end\, it will approach a definition of resilience based on existing work in the dependability field but also by revisiting the history of resilience in other disciplines. It will elaborate what we can learn from the physical\, psychological\, and ecological mechanisms of resilience and it will derive a conceptual framework for Cognitive Resilience that helps us to engineer resilient cognitive systems. \nBIO:  apl. Prof. Dr. habil. Mario Trapp is Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS.  In 2005\, he obtained his PhD with distinction from the University of Kaiserslautern\, where he also did his habilitation in 2016. In 2005\, he joined Fraunhofer IESE\, where he was initially responsible as a department head for the topic area of safety-critical software before being head of the “Embedded Systems” division from 2009 to 2017. After being appointed Acting Director of Fraunhofer ESK (today Fraunhofer IKS) effective January 1\, 2018\, he assumed this role on a permanent basis on May 1\, 2019. \nFor many years\, Prof Trapp has been contributing his expertise in the development of innovative embedded systems in the context of successful partner projects\, in cooperation with both leading international corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises. His current personal research focus is on safety assurance for autonomous and distributed systems\, which form the technological basis of many future scenarios such as Industrie 4.0 or automated driving. \nHe is the author of numerous international scientific publications and teaches as an apl. Our chances of improving upon nature in a short time (say\, 10 years) are negligible if we are bound by the same rules as biological evolution. However\, we have a unique opportunity that is not available to nature\, namely\, to amplify human cognition in real time through low-latency\, wireless access to infrastructure resources. These resources can be larger\, heavier\, more energy hungry\, and more heat dissipative than could ever be carried or worn by a human user.   Edge Computing and 5G are key enablers of this vision.  We have been exploring wearable cognitive assistance since 2014\, and built close to 20 applications of this genre.   In this talk\, I will share what we have learned through this experience.   The potential for this emerging technology to improve human productivity in many domains is indisputable.  At the same time\, important challenges must be overcome to realize this potential. \nBIO:  Satya’s multi-decade research career has focused on the challenges of performance\, scalability\, availability and trust in information systems that reach from the cloud to the mobile edge of the Internet.  In the course of this work\, he has pioneered many advances in distributed systems\, mobile computing\, pervasive computing\, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Most recently\, his seminal 2009 publication “The Case for VM-based Cloudlets in Mobile Computing” and the ensuing research has  led to the emergence of Edge Computing.  Satya is the Carnegie Group University Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.  He received the PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon\, after Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Madras. Vehicular fog computing is an emerging computing paradigm where computing resources are moved to vehicles or network infrastructure close to vehicles for shortening network latency and reducing ingress traffic to the cloud.  In this talk\, we will introduce the ongoing work at the mobile cloud computing group of Aalto University (mobilecloud.aalto.fi)\, covering fog-powered vehicular applications like vision-based mapping and localization\, deployment of fog nodes in 5G networks\, and data-driven resource and capacity planning for vehicular fog computing.

SUMMARY:Research Forum - Recap and Revival
DESCRIPTION:The TECoSA Research Forum was developed and carried out building on best practices for creating a culture for innovation that provides psychological safety\, collective intelligence\, open inclusive dialogue\, and creativity.   Initially the Research Forum was dedicated to PhD students\, and later opened up for the entire consortium.   The sessions from last year were positively received\, and there have been several requests for another event. \nThis Recap and Revival provides an overview of activities so far\, but also has new ingredients – thus a great opportunity if you were not able to join some of the original sessions.  For PhD students that want to apply for credits but missed (some of) the previous sessions\, it’s a chance to catch up. \nAll TECoSA members are welcome to join this one-day event\, which takes place on KTH Campus.  To sign-up\, please respond to the Outlook invitation (sent to the tecosa mailing list 11 April)\, or contact tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.

Edge computing offers new ways of using computational rexources\, enabling to move computation\, processing and analytics to the edge of the network and close to the place where data is generated. From 2009-2015\, he managed the ICT activities of the Public-Private Partnership Factories of the Future (PPP FOF). Since 2015\, he coordinates the cross-cutting activities  related to Internet of Things in Horizon 2020  across different policy streams with DG AGRI\, DG ENER\, DG MOVE and DG GROW. \nInside DG Connect\, he leads the research\, innovation and deployment of the next generation of the IoT with strong computing capacity at the edge exploring features like device virtualisation\, interoperability\, real-time\, energy efficiency and distributed intelligence. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nThe March talk (*moved slightly to accommodate sportlov) is given by Prof Hermann Kopetz\, Vienna University of Technology.  The session will be chaired by Martin Törngren\, and given as a hybrid option (you can join in Zoom or at KTH Campus).  This seminar will be held in collaboration with Digital Futures: Distinguished lecture: Prof Hermann Kopetz\, Vienna University of Technology — Digital Futures (kth.se) \nThe Data\, Information\, and Time (DIT) Model \nABSTRACT:  This seminar aims to present a model that clarifies the semantics behind the terms data\, information and their relations to the passage of real time. According to the DIT model a data item is a symbol the signifier of which  appears as a pattern (e.g. visual\, sound\, gesture\, or any bit pattern) in physical space.  The signifier of the symbol is generated by a human or a machine in the current contextual situation and is linked to a concept in the human mind or a set of operations of a machine as its signified.  An information item delivers the sense or the idea that a human mind extracts out of a given natural language proposition that is composed of meaningful data items. Since the given tangible\, intangible and temporal context are part of the explanation of a data item\, a change of context can have an effect on the meaning of data and the sense of a proposition. The DIT model provides a framework to show how the flow of time can change the truth-value of a proposition. Prof Kopetz compares the notions of data\, information\, and time in differing contexts: in human communication\, in the operation of a computer system and in a biological system.  In the final section\, he will present a simple example to demonstrate how the lessons learned from the DIT-model can help to reduce the complexity and improve the design of a real-time computer system. \nBIO:Hermann Kopetz is a professor emeritus at Vienna University of Technology. He was named an IEEE Fellow in 1994 for contributions to fault-tolerant\, real-time systems. Members can accept the invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nWe kick-off 2022 with a talk by Dr Ovidiu Vermesan\, Chief Scientist at SINTEF Digital.  The session will be chaired by Martin Törngren\, and given in Zoom. \nAutonomous self-organized edge IoT intelligent systems – research directions \nABSTRACT: IoT and edge computing offer new ways of using computational resources\, enabling the push of computation\, processing\, and analytics to the edge of the network and close to data sources. Edge processing embedded in IoT devices is enhanced by artificial intelligence and cognitive technologies\, involving sensing/actuation\, learning and reasoning on distributed data and across the edge continuum. This new paradigm for addressing the collective behavior of decentralized\, self-organized IoT systems requires a different innovation perspective and research directions. The presentation will give an overview of the future trends of edge intelligence technologies focusing on IoT roadmaps. \nBIO: Dr Ovidiu Vermesan holds a PhD degree in microelectronics and a Master of International Business (MIB) degree. He is Chief Scientist at SINTEF DIGITAL\, Oslo\, Norway. His research interests are in the area of embedded electronics\, smart sensor systems\, cognitive-communication systems\, intelligent edge processing and IoT technology. Dr Vermesan received SINTEF’s award for research excellence for his work on implementing a biometric sensor system. He is currently working with projects addressing integrated autonomous systems\, intelligent connectivity\, cognition systems\, security\, artificial intelligence for digitizing industry\, edge computing\, and IoT. He has authored or co-authored over 85 technical articles and conference papers. He is actively involved in different European partnerships activities. Dr Vermesan has coordinated and managed various national\, EU and other international large-scale projects covering applications in green mobility\, manufacturing\, energy\, and smart environments. He coordinates the IoT European Research Cluster (IERC) and is the Chair of the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation – AIOTI IoT Research and Partnerships working group. Dr Vermesan has recently co-edited a new book on “Artificial Intelligence for Digitising Industry – Applications” that provides in-depth insights into use cases implementing artificial intelligence (AI) applications at the edge and the transition to Industry 5.0.

Each invited speaker will talk for about 40 minutes\, followed by a panel discussion coordinated by TECoSA members. \nMing Cao\nOur third speaker this autumn is Prof Ming Cao from the Engineering and Technology Institute at the University of Groningen.  Please see the abstract and short biography below.  To read more about his research\, please see:  https://www.rug.nl/staff/m.cao/research \nPanel: Lei Feng (Chair)\,  Haydn Thompson (THHINK)\, Sonja Buchegger (KTH) \nPrivacy-preserving Dynamic Controllers  \nABSTRACT: With the fast development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing\, privacy concerns of the gathering\, processing and using of data have become a central research topic. As a quantitative criterion for privacy of “mechanisms” in the form of data-generating processes\, the concept of differential privacy was first proposed in computer science and has later been applied to linear control systems. In fact\, differential privacy can be further studied taking into account properties of dynamical systems\, and then be utilized for controller design. In this talk\, I first clarify that a classical concept in systems and control\, input observability (sometimes referred to as left invertibility)\, has a strong connection with differential privacy. In particular\, I show that the Gaussian mechanism can be made highly differentially private by adding small noise if the corresponding system is less input observable. Then I discuss a method to design dynamic controllers for the classic tracking control problem while addressing privacy concerns. We call the obtained controller through our design method the privacy-preserving controller. The usage of such controllers is further explained by the new insight into the trade-off between control performance and privacy level. \nBIO:  Since 2016\, Ming Cao has been a professor of networks and robotics at the Engineering and Technology Institute (ENTEG) at the University of Groningen\, the Netherlands\, where he started as an assistant professor in 2008.  He received the Bachelor degree in 1999 and the Master degree in 2002 from Tsinghua University\, Beijing\, China\, and the Ph.D. degree in 2007 from Yale University\, New Haven\, CT\, USA\, all in Electrical Engineering.   From September 2007 to August 2008\, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University\, USA. He worked as a research intern during the summer of 2006 with the Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center\, NY\, USA. \nHe is the 2017 and inaugural recipient of the Manfred Thoma medal from the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the 2016 recipient of the European Control Award sponsored by the European Control Association (EUCA). He is a Senior Editor for Systems and Control Letters\, an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control\, and was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems and IEEE Circuits and Systems Magazine. He is a member of the IFAC Conference Board and a vice chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Large-Scale Complex Systems. His research interests include autonomous agents and multi-agent systems\, complex networks and decision-making processes.
