SUMMARY:TECoSA internal reserach seminar - ExPECA Testbed: Architecture\, Evolution and AI-Driven Automation
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the sixth TECoSA internal seminar with the title ExPECA Testbed: Architecture\, Evolution\, and AI-Driven Automation held by Wilson Nelson (KTH/EECS/ISE). \nAbstract\nIn this seminar\, Wilson will present the current status of the ExPECA testbed\, focusing on its architecture\, key capabilities\, and its role in enabling experimentation for next-generation communication systems. Ongoing developments and planned enhancements aimed at improving flexibility\, scalability\, and automation will also be discussed. \nThe talk will further explore the integration of AI-driven agents for automated experimentation in software-based simulators\, as a step toward extending such capabilities to hardware platforms like the ExPECA testbed. These agents autonomously configure experiments\, orchestrate execution\, and analyze results\, thereby reducing manual effort and accelerating research cycles. Overall\, the seminar will provide a technical perspective on the evolution of the ExPECA testbed\, emphasizing scalable and intelligent experimentation. \nDate and time: June 5 at 12-13 o’clock.\nVenue: Teknikringen 33\, rum 3312 is booked from 11.45 to allow time for setting up and for grabbing your food. \nWe encourage TECoSA postdocs\, PhD students and PIs to join in person\, please sign up for a seat and for a prebooked lunchbox via this form by 28 May. \nYou can also attend the seminar online via Zoom-link. \nThe purpose of the internal seminar series is to keep each other informed about ongoing work at the partners and to have technical discussions. He received his PhD in Information and Communication Technology from the University of Agder (UiA)\, Norway\, where part of his research focused on communications for UAV-assisted wireless networks. Before pursuing PhD\, Wilson worked at MathWorks India Pvt. Ltd.\, contributing to projects in code generation and signal processing. He holds a Master’s degree in Communication Engineering from IIT Bombay\, India (2016) and a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Model Engineering College\, Kochi\, India (2012). Wilson’s research interests include wireless communications\, machine learning\, signal processing\, and compilers. \n

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Semantic Communication and Computing for Scalable Edge AI
DESCRIPTION:TECoSA Seminar with Carla Fabiana Chiasserini\, Politechnico di Torino on May 7 at 15 o’clock.\n\nTitle: Semantic Communication and Computing for Scalable Edge AI \nAbstract: As edge devices generate increasingly large volumes of data\, executing AI tasks closer to the network edge is becoming essential to meet stringent requirements on latency\, privacy\, and scalability. However\, this paradigm introduces challenges in communication efficiency\, resource allocation\, and distributed processing. This keynote explores how joint semantic communication-computation design can fundamentally improve edge AI systems. Rather than transmitting and computing raw data\, semantic approaches allow to convey and process only the information that is relevant for a given task\, thus substantially reducing communication and computing while preserving decision-making accuracy. We will discuss how these principles enable efficient network and split computing architectures where processing is distributed across devices and edge infrastructure. Key aspects include adaptive compression\, resource-aware AI orchestration\, and real-time multimodal data fusion for context-aware and scalable edge AI. Finally\, we will outline open research questions in the field of semantic data communications and computing toward scalable edge AI. \nBio: Carla Fabiana Chiasserini is Full Professor at Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, and a Research Associate with the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and the NationalInter-university Consortium for Telecommunications(CNIT). She is an Affiliated Professor at Chalmers Institute of Technology\, Sweden\, where she was also a WASP Guest Professor in 2023-2025. She was a Visiting Researcher at UC San Diego (1998-2003)\, and a Visiting Professor at Monash University (2012\,2016)\,the Berlin Technische Universität (2021\,2022)\, and the HPI\, Potsdam University (Mercato Fellow\, 2023 and 2024). She is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Fellow and the director of the Advanced Wireless Experience Lab at Politecnico di Torino.\nHer research interests include Next-generation Mobile Networks\, Edge Computing\, Machine Learning\, and Mobile Autonomous Systems. Carla has published over 400 journal and conference papers and has received several awards for her scientific work. SUMMARY:TECoSA seminar - The Road to Trustworthy ML: From Security and Privacy to Verifiability
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIn this talk\, Buse Atli will present the evolving landscape of security and privacy in machine learning (ML)\, drawing on insights from my own research and experiences in both academic work and real-world applications. She will describe the ongoing arms race between attacks and defenses in ML systems and discuss what these dynamics reveal about trust\, governance\, and accountability in ML. Finally\, she will argue that verifiability is one of the most critical yet still unresolved aspects of achieving trustworthy ML\, particularly in light of legal frameworks such as the EU AI Act. \nBio: Buse Atli is an Assistant Professor in the Cybersecurity Division at Linköping University. Previously\, she was a security researcher at Nokia Bell Labs\, developing threat modeling strategies for security and privacy in AI-enabled network systems. She received her PhD from Aalto University in Finland. SUMMARY:TECoSA internal research seminar - From Unified Cyber and Adversarial Defense to Efficient Collaborative Perception for Safe Intelligent Autonomous Driving
DESCRIPTION:Registration here: https://www.kth.se/form/69847724a336ea0c04b29934 \nBy Manzoor Hussain\, Postdoctoral Fellow at KTH \nAbstract \nIntelligent autonomous driving systems rely on deep learning–based perception and tightly coupled cyber-physical infrastructures\, where low latency\, reliability\, and efficiency are critical for safety. This talk explores unified and collaborative approaches to enhance the robustness and safety of such systems. \nWe first present a unified transformer-based framework that simultaneously detects adversarial attacks on perception systems and cyber-attacks on in-vehicle networks\, addressing the limitations of deploying separate defense models and reducing computational overhead. Through this unified design\, security monitoring is achieved using a single processing pipeline\, improving robustness and efficiency in safety-critical environments. \nBuilding on this foundation\, we then discuss ongoing work on efficient collaborative perception\, where vehicles and infrastructure share sensory information to extend situational awareness beyond local sensing. While motivated by autonomous driving\, the challenges addressed including distributed intelligence\, low-latency processing\, and resource-efficient computation are fundamental to a broader class of edge-enabled AI systems. We conclude by reflecting on how unified security and collaborative perception frameworks can inform the design of future trustworthy and scalable intelligent systems operating at the edge. \n  \nBio: Manzoor Hussain is a Postdoctoral Fellow at KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, working within the TECoSA research center. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Chungbuk National University\, Republic of Korea\, with a thesis titled “A Robust Unified Transformer for Security Resilience in Intelligent Systems.” His research interests include the cyber-security of intelligent systems\, AI safety and security\, and collaborative perception systems. During his doctoral studies\, he worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Software Intelligence Engineering Laboratory and completed different National Research Foundation (NRF) funded projects focusing on collaborative cyber-physical systems safety in the autonomous driving domain.

The seminar will take place via Zoom\, through this link. \n \nAbstract: One grand societal challenge is how to provide affordable\, quality broadband connectivity to rural regions today while ensuring that rural broadband does not always lag behind urban broadband as technologies and services evolve. To address the challenge\, we need to nurture rural-focused broadband innovation and associated innovation communities. In this talk\, I will share the design principles\, hardware and software implementation\, as well as the enabled wireless and applications research of the ARA living lab. I will also discuss open challenges in developing and operating such living labs\, as well as the opportunities of leveraging rural industries (e.g.\, agriculture) for advancing the frontier of wireless systems such as Open RAN and 6G. \nBio: Hongwei Zhang is the Richardson Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Center for Wireless\, Communities and Innovation (WiCI) at Iowa State University. His research investigates modeling\, algorithmic\, and systems issues in wireless sensing and control networks as well as their applications in connected and automated vehicles\, XR\, and cyber-physical-human systems in general. He has led the development of open-innovation infrastructures for precision agriculture\, connected and automated transportation\, cellular networks\, and IoT networks which have been used by researchers worldwide. His work has been recognized by best paper awards from the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS)\, IEEE International Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)\, and ACM Workshop on Wireless Network Testbeds\, Experimental evaluation and CHaracterization (WiNTECH)\, IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine\, and Journal of Systems Science and Complexity (Springer). This presentation details its architecture\, capabilities\, and experimental framework. Past \nexperiments\, illustrating the exploration of technologies from full-duplex and mmWave communications to open-source 5G system integration and O-RAN Alliance participation\, will be highlighted. COSMOS’s impact on smart city development\, particularly in urban connectivity and infrastructure management\, will also be showcased. The presentation concludes with a discussion of upcoming hardware upgrades focused on FR3 and intelligent spectrum coordination experimentation. \nBio: Ivan Seskar is the Chief Technologist and Director/IT at WINLAB\, Rutgers University responsible for experimental systems and prototyping projects. He is currently the program director for the COSMOS project responsible for the New York City NSF PAWR deployment. He has also been the co-PI and project manager for all three phases of the NSF-supported ORBIT mid-scale testbed project at WINLAB\, successfully leading technology development and operations since the testbed was released as a community resource in 2005 and for which the team received the 2008 NSF Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation.  Ivan is a co-chair of the IEEE Future Networks Testbed Working Group\, member of the IEEE Standardization Programs Development Board and the co-founder and CTO of Upside Wireless Inc.

The discussion emphasizes learning efficiency through inductive biases\, causal reasoning and curiosity-driven exploration\, showcasing an experiential learning technique with unparalleled sample efficiency in grid world environments. Comparative results on the Minigrid benchmark and preliminary experiments with a simulated mobile robot highlight the approach’s versatility. The talk concludes with insights into unifying diverse methodologies and an optimistic outlook for advancing research toward AI’s original\, ambitious objectives. \nBio: Patrick Hammer is an AI researcher and postdoctoral scholar in the Division of Robotics\, Perception\, and Learning at KTH. His research focuses on advancing the autonomy of intelligent agents\, especially mobile robots\, by providing them with higher levels of adaptiveness\, emphasizing the integration of Non-Axiomatic Reasoning and Deep Neural Networks. His long-term vision is to replicate\, in computer systems\, key aspects of natural intelligence as showcased by higher-developed animals in their cognitive capacities and ability to improvise.

We will review the transformation of IEC 61499 standard concept and developments in the adjacent areas of computing and to summarise newly emerging challenges.\n\nBIO: Valeriy Vyatkin (IEEE Fellow) is Professor of Information and Computer Engineering in Automation at Aalto University\, Finland on joint appointment as Chaired Professor (Ämnesföreträdare) of Dependable Computation and Communication Systems\, Luleå University of Technology\, Luleå\, Sweden. He has been leading research projects related to software and systems engineering for cyber-physical automation systems\, intelligent energy\, logistics and transportation\, addressing such aspects as dependability\, distributed architectures and multi-agent systems applied in various industry sectors: SmartGrid\, material handling\, building management systems and reconfigurable manufacturing\,  funded by the National Science Foundation (USA)\, Vettenskap Råd (Sweden)\, Academy of Finland\, various national and private agencies in Japan\, Germany\, New Zealand\, Sweden\, Finland and the EU. Valeriy is an active IEEE volunteer for about 20 years\, currently serving as Vice-President for Technical Activities of Industrial Electronics Society.

It will also be possible to attend via Zoom.  \nABSTRACT: In recent years\, enormous investments in Automated Driving Systems (ADSs) have distinctly advanced ADS technologies. Despite promises made by several high profile auto-makers\, it has however become clear that the challenges involved for deploying ADS have been drastically underestimated.Contrary to previous generations of automotive systems\, common design\, development\, verification and validation methods for safety critical systems do not suffice to cope with the increased complexity and operational uncertainties of an ADS. In this talk I will present the key findings from a review paper conducted with the aim to provide an understanding of existing methods for providing safety evidence and\, in particular\, identifying the associated challenges and gaps pertaining to the use of each method. Four categories of methods: design techniques\, verification and validation methods\, run-time risk assessment\, and run-time (self-)adaptation\, are presented and the eight challenges (identified in the paper) help provide insights into a selection of the reviewed methods. Finally\, the derived set of research gaps will be discussed. \n\nThe talk is based on the results of a review paper currently in submission – an early preprint-version of which can be found at: https://www.techrxiv.org/doi/full/10.36227/techrxiv.20331243.v1 \n  \n\nBIO: Magnus Gyllenhammar pursues a PhD at KTH Royal Institute of Technology as part of his employment at Zenseact\, Gothenburg\, Sweden. His research focuses on finding efficient strategies for safety argumentation of ADSs\, especially focusing on precautionary safety and dynamic risk assessment in relation to the fulfilment of a quantitative risk norm. He received his MSc. in Engineering Physics\, major in Complex Adaptive System\, from Chalmers University of Technology\, in 2016. In 2018\, he joined Zenseact (then Zenuity) and has since worked on creating and realising data-driven strategies for verification and safety argumentation of ADSs.

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Radio Positioning in 6G Communication Systems

Members can accept the Outlook invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur guest speaker for May is Marina Petrova\, Professor of Wireless Communications with RWTH Aachen\, and a Visiting Professor with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, KTH.  The session will be given via Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267). \nABSTACT: Enabling sensing functionality with cellular network infrastructure is envisioned as one of the disruptive features of the sixth-generation (6G) networks. By doing so\, future networks will be able to “see” the physical world through radio imaging and measuring the surrounding environment\, and offer advanced location-aware services and applications. Joint design of communication and sensing in a so called Integrated Communication and Sensing  (ICaS) system requires careful optimization of the available system resources between the two functions to meet their respective target requirements. In this talk\, I will first motivate and present the background of ICaS systems. Thereafter I will highlight our latest research results on a 5G New Radio (NR)-based cooperative multi-monostatic sensing framework for passive target localization. Our fusion-based estimation process can mitigate the effect of multipath and increase the localization accuracy in a bandwidth limited scenario. Finally\, I will conclude the talk by identifying and discussing major open challenges and future directions in designing ICaS systems. \nBIO: Marina Petrova received the Diploma degree in electronics engineering and telecommunications from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University\, Skopje\, North Macedonia and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from RWTH Aachen University\, Aachen\, Germany. She is currently a Professor of Wireless Communications with RWTH Aachen\, and a Visiting Professor with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Stockholm\, Sweden. Her research interests are in system-level modeling\, optimization\, and design of future intelligent wireless systems including\, millimeter-wave and ICAS technologies\, joint radio access and mobile computing\, and spectrum sharing. She has published about 150 articles in journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Petrova is a recipient of the Future Research Leader Award from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research and was named a Wallenberg Academy Fellow in 2019. She has served as an Editor for IEEE Wireless Communication Letters and IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.

To ensure that such systems are useful and trusted by members of our society\, they need to act in an understandable way and meet their users’ requirements. Requirements in this context are often related to qualities\, such as performance\, security\, reliability\, or safety. Humans tend to have preferences regarding what requirements are important in different contexts. To help systems understand these requirements and how they change\, software-based approaches are needed that enable humans to give input\, monitor systems\, and intervene when necessary. In this talk\, Rebekka will present recent work on how such solutions can be designed to develop better human-on-the-loop autonomous systems. \nBIO: Rebekka Wohlrab is an assistant professor at Chalmers University of Technology\, and an adjunct faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University. DESCRIPTION:[For TECoSA members only.] \nSpeaker: Elmira Yadollahi\, TECoSA postdoc\n(Venue\, Zoom link and sign-up link circulated to members)\nPlease email vickid@kth.se if you have any questions. \nABSTRACT: Explainability in human‑robot collaboration refers to the robot’s ability to provide clear\, transparent\, and interpretable explanations for its actions and decisions. It bridges the communication gap between complex machine functionalities and humans. An active area of investigation in robotics and AI is understanding and generating explanations that can enhance collaboration and mutual understanding between humans and machines. A key to achieving such seamless collaborations is understanding end-users\, whether naive or expert\, and tailoring explanation features that are intuitive\, user-centered\, and contextually relevant. Advancing on the topic includes modelling humans’ expectations for generating explanations and developing metrics to evaluate them and assess how effectively autonomous systems communicate their intentions\, actions\, and decision-making rationale. This seminar will present multiple user studies\, focusing on understanding how humans perceive robots’ or autonomous vehicles’ explanations in different scenarios\, e.g.\, failures or accidents. Subsequently\, we transition to a phase of basic modelling of human expectations and machine understanding\, leading us to develop adaptive learning approaches that leverage reinforcement learning strategies to refine and enhance these machines’ explanatory capabilities. \n  \n

Members can accept the Outlook invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur first speaker of 2024 is Emil Björnsson\, Professor of Wireless Communication at KTH.  The seminar will take place in Gladan (Brinellvägen 85\, KTH Campus) and via Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267). \nABSTRACT:  The world is becoming increasingly digitalized and connected\, and mobile broadband connectivity is the backbone of this development. The demand for capacity and service quality expectations are constantly increasing\, which calls for continuous technological evolution. The wireless technology is developed in cycles; a new generation is developed during each decade and then deployed during the next decade. The first phase of the 5G roll-out has now finished\, and the research community has shifted focus towards 6G\, the sixth generation of mobile network technology. \nWhy do we need to further evolve the wireless technology towards 6G? In this seminar\, I will describe the wireless evolution with a focus on mobile broadband applications\, where the service quality is characterized by the data speed and traffic capacity. I will discuss how much faster wireless technology must become and what the real bottlenecks and technological challenges are. This leads us to the vision behind the new Vinnova Competence Center\, Swedish Wireless Innovation Network (SweWIN)\, which focuses on making future technology more sustainable\, resilient\, and fair. \nBIO:  Emil Björnson is a Professor of Wireless Communication at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Stockholm\, Sweden. He is an IEEE Fellow\, Digital Futures Fellow\, and Wallenberg Academy Fellow. He has a podcast and YouTube channel called Wireless Future. His research focuses on multi-antenna communications and radio resource management\, using methods from communication theory\, signal processing\, and machine learning. He has authored four textbooks and has published a large amount of simulation code. \nHe has received the 2018 and 2022 IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Awards in Wireless Communications\, the 2019 EURASIP Early Career Award\, the 2019 IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize\, the 2019 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Column Award\, the 2020 Pierre-Simon Laplace Early Career Technical Achievement Award\, the 2020 CTTC Early Achievement Award\, the 2021 IEEE ComSoc RCC Early Achievement Award\, and the 2023 IEEE Communications Society Outstanding Paper Award. His work has also received six Best Paper Awards at conferences.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Daniel Simões Marta\, TECoSA PhD student\n(Venue\, Zoom link and sign-up link circulated to members)\nPlease email vickid@kth.se if you have any questions. \nABSTRACT: Reinforcement learning from informed by human feedback (RLHF) has emerged as a novel domain in machine learning\, where human insights are crucial in shaping the behavior of an AI agent. Within this domain\, a significant strategy is preference-based reinforcement learning\, in which a human-informed reward system is developed through the evaluation and selection among different sets of action sequences. In this talk\, I will present several works conducted by our group on aligning RL policies with human feedback. I will primarily focus on aligning relevant features such as safety and perceived safety—even though the work can be extended to any desired feature—and will discuss the application of these principles in the context of RL policies. Additionally\, I will provide concrete examples of leveraging human intrinsic knowledge through methods such as ranking\, stating preferences\, and analyzing text.

SUMMARY:TECoSA Seminar - Learning Optimal Edge Processing with Offloading and Energy Harvesting

Members can accept the Outlook invitations\, non-members can email tecosa-admin@kth.se to register.\nOur guest speaker for November is Francesco De Pellegrini\, Professor of networking and AI at the University of Avignon\, France.  The seminar will take place via Zoom (https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/66857695267). \nABSTRACT:  Modern portable devices can execute increasingly sophisticated AI models on sensed data. The complexity of such processing tasks is data-dependent and has relevant energy cost. This work develops an Age of Information markovian model for a system where multiple battery-operated devices perform data processing and energy harvesting in parallel. Part of their computational burden is offloaded to an edge server which polls devices at given rate. The structural properties of an optimal policy for a single device-server system are derived. They permit to define a new model-free reinforcement learning method specialized for monotone policies\, namely Ordered Q-Learning\, providing a fast procedure to learn the optimal policy. The method is oblivious to the devices’ battery capacities\, the cost and the value of data batch processing and to the dynamics of the energy harvesting process. Finally\, the polling strategy of the server is optimized by combining this policy improvement technique with stochastic approximation methods. Extensive numerical results provide insight into the system properties and demonstrate that the proposed learning algorithms outperform existing baselines. \nBIO: Francesco De Pellegrini received the MSc 2000\, and the Ph.D. 2004\, in Information Engineering at the University of Padova\, Italy. He is currently full professor at the University of Avignon\, where he teaches networking and artificial intelligence  He has published 100+ papers in major conferences and journals of computer science\, networking and control theory. He applies algorithms on graphs\, stochastic and control\, and game theory for the design and perfomance evaluation of wireless and wired networked systems. He has co-authored two best papers\, published in WiOPT 2014 and at NetGCoop 2016. His current H-index (Google) is 30 with 7000+ citations. He is anassociated editor for TNSE. He has been general co-chair of IEEE NETGCOOP 2012 and IEEE WIOPT2022\, and TPC Co-Chair of IEEE NETGCOOP 2014\, IEEE WIOPT 2018 and ITC 2021.

SUMMARY:TECoSA Research Seminar: Getting the Best Out of Both Worlds: Algorithms for Hierarchical Inference at the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Vishnu Narayanan Moothedath\, TECoSA PhD student\nVenue\, Zoom link and sign-up link circulated to members\nPlease email vickid@kth.se if you have any questions. \nABSTRACT: We consider a resource-constrained Edge Device (ED)\, such as an IoT sensor or a microcontroller unit\, embedded with a small-size ML model (S-ML) for a generic classification application\, and an Edge Server (ES) that hosts a large-size ML model (L-ML). Since the inference accuracy of S-ML is lower than that of the L-ML\, offloading all the data samples to the ES results in high inference accuracy\, but it defeats the purpose of embedding S-ML on the ED and deprives the benefits of reduced latency\, bandwidth savings\, and energy efficiency of doing local inference. In order to get the best out of both worlds\, i.e.\, the benefits of doing inference on the ED and the benefits of doing inference on ES\, we explore the idea of Hierarchical Inference (HI)\, wherein S-ML inference is only accepted when it is correct\, otherwise the data sample is offloaded for L-ML inference. However\, the ideal implementation of HI is infeasible as the correctness of the S-ML inference is not known to the ED. We thus propose an online meta-learning framework that the ED can use to predict the correctness of the S-ML inference. In particular\, we propose to use the probability corresponding to the maximum probability class output by S-ML for a data sample and decide whether to offload it or not. The resulting online learning problem turns out to be a Prediction with Expert Advice (PEA) problem with continuous expert space. We consider two scenarios\, a full feedback scenario\, where the ED receives feedback on the correctness of the S-ML once it accepts the inference\, and a no-local feedback scenario. We propose the HIL-F and HIL-N algorithms and prove that both of them has sublinear regret bounds without any assumption on the smoothness of the loss function. We evaluate and benchmark the performance of the proposed algorithms for image classification application using different datasets.
